Kasargod: Permude chapel to be declared parish

Kasargod, Mar 17: The announcement of new Permude St Lawrence parish will be made on March 19. Bishop of Mangaluru diocese Fr Dr Aloysius Paul D'Souza will make the announcement at a programme scheduled at Permude Lawrence Nagar at 4 pm.

Fr Melwin Fernandes will be given charge as parish priest of the church. Kayyar Christaraja Church parish priest Fr Victor D'Souza, priests of the diocese and nuns will be present. The bishop will later offer holy mass.

The dawn of Permude church will increase the number of churches in Kasargod to 14. It will be the 118 th parish in Mangaluru diocese.

Permude St Lawrence chapel under the control of Kayyar Christaraja Church had become an independent chapel from July 1, 2017. The bishop of Mangaluru handed it over to dominican priests. Fr Melwin Fernandes was named director of the chapel. The then Kayyar temple parish priest Fr L S Pais constructed two classrooms at Permude for children's education. Fr Alexander Aranha who was the parish priest of Kayyar church in 1972 obtained recognition of the chapel.

Mangaluru diocese vicar general Fr Denis Moras laid the foundation stone for the construction of the new church on August 7, 2016. The work is in progress.
