Bantwal, Mar 15: A bus belonging to Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) toppled by the roadside at Mani Junction on national highway 75 due to the road turning slippery because of the first ever rain of this summer season, on the evening of Wednesday March 14. In this accident, a woman died on the spot, while five others suffered serious injuries.

Divya Prabhu (40), resident of Ramanagara, Uppinangady, died in the accident. Five persons including bus conductor suffered grievous injuries. About ten people escaped with minor nicks and cuts.

Ratna Prabhu (71), Deepthi Prabhu (11), Yashas Prabhu (8) and some others were admitted into a private hospital at Mangaluru. Bus conductor, Prabhakar, was admitted into a private hospital at Thumbe.

The bus was moving towards Mangaluru from the direction of Uppinaangady when its wheels lost grip near a college at Mani. The bus hit a roadside mud wall and fell down. Some people atributed this accident to competition between private and government buses in spite of the rain having made the road slippery.

The bus had over 25 passengers when it met with this accident. Driver of the bus, Ravi, escaped immediately after the accident. Vittal police visited the spot and undertook investigation. The bus was lifted with the help of backhoe and traffic was restored.
