Mangaluru, Mar 14: As part of the national stir, the Karnataka chapter of Indian Medical Association (IMA) on Tuesday March 14 launched a statewide 'Bharat Yatra' at IMA House against the proposed National Medical Commission (NMC) bill which seeks to create bridge course for AYUSH doctors, which, the IMA said, would deprive the public of the benefit of Indian system of medicine which has a long history.
IMA Karnataka state president Dr Ravindra speaking on the ocassion of the launch of the Karnataka leg of Bharat Yatra called upon the government not to go ahead with implementation of the bill.
"The public will be guinea pigs of doctors who lack expertise in either system of medicine. In a hurry to provide rural healthcare, the government wants to experiment with the health of the rural public at the hands of trainee doctors," he said.
He highlighted the greater danger of corruption that may set in with the nominated pattern of NMC at multitude of levels with the current draft.
He also called upon the younger doctors to introspect and emulate the ideals of seniors, to reciprocate to social causes of the public.
The programme was inaugrated in the presence of Dr Ravindra H N, Dr Geetha Doppa , Dr V B Nitali, Dr Harish Delanthabettu, Dr Bhaskar S, Dr K R Kamath , Dr M Shantaram Shetty, Dr K V Devadiga, Dr Habeeb Rehaman, Dr Mukund K and Dr Divaker Rao.
Handing of the Bharat Yatra Jyoti (torch) to the other parts of the states was done at the ceremony. The Yatra will culminate at New Delhi with the 'Mahapanchayat' of doctors on March 25 which will have an attendance of 20,000 doctors.
Dr K R Kamath, IMA Mangaluru president welcomed, Dr Ullasa Shetty submitted the report of activities and Dr Suchitra Kamath proposed the vote of thanks. Dr Annaya Kulal compered the programme.
Later a cycle and bike rally was flagged by Dr Ravindra to the DC office and a memorandum of demands addressed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi was submitted asking to withhold the NMC bill. IMA Mangaluru president-elect Dr Sachidanda Rai, Dr Prakash Harischandra, Dr G K Bhat, Dr Dr P K Pai, Dr Ganesh Prasad, Dr Amritha Bhandary, Dr M Revankar and others were part of the delegation.
The rally was attended by doctors and medical students of the district and the state.
