Mangaluru, Mar 9: MLA of Mangaluru North Mohiuddin Bava, in a zest to reach out to voters in his constituency, has landed in a soup, after a song promoting his works was found to have been a distortion of a devotional song.
Allegedly, Bava used a devotional song on Ayyappa Swamy and changed its lyrics to promote his own works.
The song has gone viral on social media, and understandably, not gone down well with Ayyappa Swamy devotees.
The Ayyappa Seva Trust of Maroli on Friday March 9 submitted a complaint to deputy commissioner Sasikanth Senthil seeking action against the MLA and those involved in making the publicity song.
The devotees alleged that it was wrong on the part of MLA Bava to choose this particular song, 'in a state where the government has already insulted the Hindu beliefs several times', for political gains.
Ayyappa Seva Trust president Jayakumar said in the complaint, "MLA BA Mohiuddin Bava has distorted an Ayyappa Swamy devotional song for his political gains and thereby ridiculed our god and culture. He has hurt the religious sentiments of Hindus. Hence, an inquiry should be conducted and suitable action should be taken against those involved in the incident."
MLA Bava purportedly used the Ayyappa devotional song 'Kallum Mullum Sabarimalaikku' for his publicity by changing the lyrics and replacing it with Tulu lyrics that begin with 'Kallu Mullu Tojune Ijji'. The new lyrics speak of Bava's developmental works. The music and the tune are same as in the original song.
Various Hindu organizations condemned the act and demanded Bava to withdraw the song without any delay.
Speaking to daijiworld, BJP's Dr Y Bharath Shetty said, "This has hurt the religious sentiments of Hindus, especially of Ayyappa devotees. The original song is sacred for Ayyappa devotees. Despite knowing this, Mohiuddin Bava made a parody of this song, which is condemnable. Bava has tried to make people hear his name instead of God's when they listen to the song. This is third class politics. Will he be ready to change the Azaan to make a publicity song? There are so many film songs, we do not object making parodies on those.
"We in BJP suspect a conspiracy to create communal unrest in Suratkal by way of this audio," he added.
Sources said that this is one of the many songs Bava has prepared for the election campaign in his constituency. The songs have gone viral.
Umanath Kotian Abhimani Sangha, Mulky, Moodbidri commented that 'anti-Hindu' government of chief minister Siddaramaiah had already "targeted Hindu religious deities, maths and schools. It has not even spared the bhajans of Ayyappa, who is worshiped by crores of people", they said.
