Mangaluru: Former professor of St Aloysius College I Chikkappa Rai passes away

Mangaluru, Mar 8: Prof I Chikkappa Rai (84), former head of the department of Botany, St Aloysius College succumbed to old age this evening, Thursday March 8. He passed away at about 7 pm at his residence on Suvarna Road, Kankanady. 

Hailing from the reputed Ichilampady family, Prof I Chikkappa Rai is survived by his wife Shankari Rai, two sons Subodh and Ramchethan, and a daughter Chinnamma. His elder son Subodh Rai is assistant director (purchase) at Nitte Deemed University in city while his second son Ramchethan Rai is an Orthodontist based in Kasargod.

Prof I Chikkappa Rai joined department of Botany at St Aloysius College in 1955 and retired as head of the department in 1991. Between 1983 and 1990, he served as registrar (evaluations) in the newly formed Mangalore University. 

The last rites will be performed at Nandigudda Crematorium on Friday March 9 at 5 pm.

    An excellent teacher of botany ,who well prepared for his subject. He never carried a book to the class & taught uninterrupted. Students had good respect for him & also fearful of him. The two years 1980-82, his teaching to us are memorable. His voice & name was enough for students to be alert particularly during afternoon classes. RIP sir. May the Lord give courage to his family to bear the loss.
