Mangaluru, Mar 7: Outgoing mayor Kavita Sanil on Wednesday March 7 thanked the citizens of Mangaluru for supporting her during her one-year tenure and also listed out the development works that were initiated under her administration.
Addressing a press meet here, Kavita Sanil said, "I received tremendous support from deputy mayor Rajaneesh and former mayor Shashidhar Hegde. Other corporators and chairpersons of various committees guided me very well with valuable suggestions.
"The people of the city irrespective of my political affiliation stood by me in carrying out various developmental works and during some tough moments. I am grateful to them. With their blessings I have completed my tenure successfully. I assure them that I will not stop my social service. I will be active among the people and raise my voice for issues that matter to them," she said.
"At the time of taking charge as mayor, I promised to do my best to solve the issue of water scarcity. I am happy to say that I succeeded in enabling storage of 6 meters of water in the Thumbe dam. It will be sufficient to meet the water demand in the city.
"Development works worth Rs 180 crore have been done in the city during my tenure. Some of the important works include installation of e-toilets, gardens in major places, sign boards, separate space for street vendors, facility for startup centre, and roads for various wards.
"I reduced the Town Hall rent to do justice to our artistes. In memory of the pioneer of Mangaluru city I instituted the Srinivas Mallya Award and MCC Day celebration. The proposals to have a new entrance to Nehru Maidan and construction of Clock Tower were made during my tenure and both projects are under progress.
"I tried to stop illegal massage parlours and skill game centers in the city. Despite threat calls from Mumbai and Dubai, I tried my best to save our youngsters from such unwanted things," she said.
"With the introduction of the phone-in programme we created a platform for the public to interact directly with the corporation officials about their issues. Many have benefited from this programme.
"Indira Canteen is a programme of the state government, but the corporation also put some share of the funds for its infrastructure and basic needs. I can say I am satisfied with the bunch of developmental works done during my tenure. The citizens of Mangaluru know this very well. I once again thank them?
Deputy mayor Rajaneesh, former mayor Shashidhar Hegde, and corporator Sabita Misquith were present.
