Bengaluru: Hunger-free Karnataka - Govt to launch 'Saviruchi Canteen' on Feb 27

Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru (SP)

Bengaluru, Feb 27: The state government, which had earlier introduced 'Indira Canteens' to provide food to the poor at affordable prices, is geared up to launch its new scheme, 'Saviruchi Canteen' on Tuesday February 27. Chief minister, Siddaramaiah, will be dedicating the canteens to the public at a function being held at the eastern main gate of Vidhan Soudha.

This information was provided by Bhrathi Shankar, chairperson of Karnataka State Women's Development Corporation, addressing a press conference here on Monday February 26. She said that ministers, R Roshan Baig, K J George, Umashree, Ramalinga Reddy and H M Revanna, apart from leader of the opposition in the assembly, Jagadish Shettar, city mayor, Sampathraj and others will participate as chief guests of the inaugural function.

At the programme, the chief minister will be handing over mobile vehicles to Sthree Shakti groups from all the districts. Moreover, mechanically operated two-wheeler vehicles would be given to physically challenged persons, she added.

The government plans to implement this scheme in association with district level Sthree Shakti groups. Bharathi said that the main aim of the government is to empower Sthree Shakti groups and that for this purpose, the government has already lent ten lac rupees each by way of interest-free loan, she explained.

'Saviruchi Canteen' is the 'seeda Rupaiya sarkar' genuine efforts to fulfill the poor and hungry of kannadigas.
Then Gujarat CM Modi’s remarks about malnutrition in a Wall Street Journal interview said “We are the first state in the country to raise the issue of malnutrition. It came to our mind that Gujarat is by and large a vegetarian state. And secondly, Gujarat is also a middle-class state. The middle class is more beauty conscious than health conscious – that is a challenge. If a mother tells her daughter to have milk, they’ll have a fight. She’ll tell her mother, ‘I won’t drink milk. I’ll get fat.’ They have money but she’s beauty conscious, she’s not health conscious."
In BJP ruled Maharashtra during April 2016 to Aug 2016, 6148 infants died in Maharashtra and 881 mothers died between April 2016 to Nov 2016. In that case, one of the petitioners showed the court a reply received through the Right to Information (RTI) Act which said over 17,000 persons, including women and children, had died due to malnutrition in the state in the last one year.
The death of 52 infants over 30 days at Jamshedpur's Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College hospital in Jharkhand, reported on 27 August, 2017
As national attention was focussed on the death of 18 children over three days in Ahmedabad’s main civil hospital in October 2017, officials said most children were underweight and thus vulnerable.
Up to 33 infants die per 1,000 live births in Gujarat, compared to Kerala (12), Tamil Nadu (19), Maharashtra (21) and Punjab (23), according to the Sample Registration System Statistical Report 2015, the latest available data.
Up to 39% of children in Gujarat are underweight–the national average is 35%. On underweight prevalence, Gujarat is ranked, as we said, 25th among 29 states.
When one In Four Children In Indian Cities Malnourished 'Saviruchi Canteen' is the big step is much appreciable by the CM Siddaramaiah' government.

Its a very good initiative but It is not clear how these canteens are going to operate and who are the beneficiaries. Secondly the food served by these canteens is free or for a nominal fee?
If it is subsidised rate, how poorest of poor ( no income at all ) is going to get the food. Good initiative, but government need to identify people with NO INCOME AT ALL ( people above 60 with no children to support them) and give them some kind of allowances for their livelihood.

If it's election gimmick let it be so as long as it feeds the hungry. If the hungry are able to get food even in the name of election, it's good. Time might be wrong, but not the purpose and end. If an party and any government does this even for election, I will still support it because it feeds the hungry. Ask the needy people who are stand in queue to get this food. They aren't just bothered about as to who has made this possible and which political party is responsible for this. They will have food and leave invoking God's blessings whoever responsible for their daily food. Come election, they will vote the party they want to and not necessarily the party which has given them affordable food, education etc. Any government taking up such initiatives need to be commended. I am for it and I even suggest if government can promote food bank where people who are well-enough can contribute some food items every day and that food can be accessed by the needy and hungry free of cost. Such wonderful initiative has been introduced in Our Lady of Rosario Church Doha-Qatar recently wherein those who can afford to contribute food can contribute to the Food Bank/Counter and those who cannot afford, hungry can walk in there anytime during the day and have it free of cost. Greatest pain for me is seeing someone hungry while a lot of us waste so much of food every day. Value of each grain of food can be understood only by those who have experienced the hunger themselves. I may vote this present government but I would support these initiatives and pray to the Almighty to bless such people even if they are doing it for the sake of getting votes.

Now I must admit that even though I am outside India, I am better informed than you. These cantenes aren't announced yesterday and are going begin tomorrow. They were announced soon after Indira Canteens were launched in August-September 2017. They aren't either free of cost. The Karnataka State Women’s Development Corporation (KSWDC) provides a loan of Rs 10 lac at a nominal interest of 4% to any Women Self Help Group (SHG) that is intending to start and run the canteen. Government does not run them. The monetary allocations towards this have been done in the 2017 as well as 2018 budget itself through the allocations granted to Karnataka State Women’s Development Corporation. The professional expertise of CSIR-Central Food Technological Research Institute (CFTRI), Mysore, is taken to train women members on preparations, management, health and hygine of the cateens. It's planned well in advance and implemented after due training to the SHGs and not a hasty, under prepared decision like Demonetization.

This all only for show off business by the govt. For instance, see the maintenance of public toilets in GOVT bus stands and GOVT buses cleanliness ! Hygiene is far away from the govt hospitals ! govt buses only cleaned during the rainy days by nature !

This canteens leave it alone to the GOD hands !!

Next scheme is Maths Ruchi scheme where thirty percent vote and other 70 just do not take part in the franchise exercise. This is chalta hai democracy.
