'No Helmet, No Petrol' rule for two-wheelers comes into force in Belagavi

Daijiworld Media Network - Belagavi (MS)

Belagavi, Feb 21: Riders of two-wheelers will not be given petrol in petrol bunks if they do not wear a helmet. This rule has been implemented from Wednesday, February 21 in the city of Belagavi.

Belagavi police, who have decided to strengthen the helmet rule further for two-wheeler riders, are conducting 'No Helmet, No Petrol' campaign. Every rider who goes to the petrol bunk to refill petrol must wear a helmet. If not, the petrol distributors are instructed by the Belagavi police not to fill petrol to such two-wheelers.

Seema Latkar, deputy commissioner of police (DCP), who conducted a meeting at the police commissioners office, with all the petrol distributors of the city on Tuesday, February 20 has sought their cooperation to make 'Compulsory Helmet' campaign a success. As all the petrol distributors agreed to the request of the DCP, the rule is implemented from Wednesday, February 21 itself.

Police protection in every petrol bunk

Petrol distributors have been asked to display the circular mentioning the 'No Helmet, No Petrol' campaign sent by the police department in every bunk. It is also made compulsory for the petrol bunks to keep their CCTV cameras in running all the time. The DCP has assured the presence of one police constable in every petrol bunk to prevent the customers from getting into argument with the petrol bunk staff.

Belagavi gets the ball rolling

Belagavi is the first to implement the 'No Helmet, No Petrol' model awareness campaign in the state of Karnataka. This campaign will start in the twin cities of Dharwad - Hubballi from February 22. Some cities including Vijayapura have also shown interest in joining this campaign. T

his rule is already in place in the neighbouring state of Andhra Pradesh.

Why as citizen we are so reluctant to follow rules end of the day it could save your life after all ? Its just the lack of basic moral education in schools and neglect of parents to control the kids. What ever happened the good old smacking of the kids (no matter how old you are) by your parents. All this has made a huge impact with the youth. Hope fully as citizens we all can cooperate with the govt and police follow rules for the betterment of the society and the human kind. If are going the way we are going.. not sure where we are all going to end up soon.....

Why are so many people against a police initiative that would force few extra people to wear a helmet? People who oppose helmet now should not blame the Government / Police next time a young fellow dies of head injury from a motorcycle accident.
After all whose life is the police trying to save here?
I know that the roads in India are bad, the implementation of traffic rules are slack. These woes are not going to be eradicated in one day.
Any initiative by the police that would try to change this culture of reckless behaviour on the roads (including helmetless riding) should be appreciated.
