Mangaluru, Feb 10: A group of people allegedly belonging to right-wing, late night on Friday February 9 assaulted a woman besides trying to outrage her modesty. The incident, which took place at Adyapady, came to light on Saturday February 10.
It is learnt that the woman, who is working at the Mangaluru airport, had been to a birthday party of a colleague on Friday night. After the party, since it was late, others suggested that she let someone drop her home instead of going back alone, and she accepted a lift home from a male colleague in his car.
It is said that while they were driving past the Maravoor bridge, a group of seven persons saw the man and the woman in the car and started following them in bikes. The group then waylaid their car at Adyapady. They then allegedly assaulted the man as well the woman, and also molested her. They claimed themselves to be right-wing activists, sources said.
Sources said that the attackers even robbed the male colleague's ATM card and withdrew cash after forcing the PIN out of him. They also robbed a gold chain from the victims and deliberately rammed the man's car into the parapet of the road.
While the attack was happening, the man made a call to the lady colleague (whose birthday they had attended) who heard the ruckus over the phone and immediately came to their rescue. When the group saw her arriving, they escaped from the spot. She then got both the woman and her colleague admitted to hospital and lodged a complaint with the local police.
Sources said that the attackers were also employeed at the airport for menial tasks.
Bajpe police have registered a case and investigation is on.
