Bengaluru, Jan 10: Primary and secondary education minister Tanveer Sait has been receiving death threats and a demand for ransom of Rs 10 crore from a caller who claims to be associated with underworld don Ravi Poojary.
Sait who has lodged a complaint with the DG-IGP has also brought the issue to the notice of Home Minister Ramalinga Reddy.
After the death threats, Sait’s security has been escalated and he is being guarded by gunmen and his phone is only received by his secretaries.
The minister received the ransom calls and threats while he was touring Sira, Tumakuru district, and was returning to Bengaluru on Saturday.
The minister's personal secretary Ravi Kumar and Firoze, a senior official from Tanveer Sait's office have lodged a complaint with the state police chief on Tuesday and even produced the Call Detail Records (CDRs) of the minister's mobile phone.
The international calls were Voice-Over-Internet-Protocol (VOIP) based. The police department is probing the issue.
