Mangaluru, Jan 6: The people of Mangaluru have generously responded to the appeal of financial help to the family of Deepak, who was murdered on Wednesday, January 3. Various media had highlighted the dire straits into which Deepak's family had plunged into following his barbaric murder.
As of the evening of Friday, January 5, a whopping Rs 17,43,859 has been deposited in the account of Prema, mother of slain Deepak.
BJP MP Nalin Kumar Kateel posted this information on his Facebook page and has thanked all the people who have contributed to the noble cause. Friends of Deepak had posted requests on Facebook and WhatsApp giving the account information of Deepak's mother. These posts went viral and kind-hearted citizens of Dakshina Kannada district started sending money online to the account.

This apart, the district administration and the state government have announced compensation of a total of Rs 10 lac. Mangaluru North MLA Mohiuddin Bava too offered Rs 5 lac, but his aid was rejected by the distressed family that has sought justice in the case.
Deepak Rao was hacked to death in broad daylight on January 3 at Katipalla. Hours after the murder, the police succeeded in arresting the accused after a dramatic car chase in Moodbidri. Deepak's murder has stirred a string of protests by the BJP and right-wing organizations.
