Mangaluru, Jan 3: A pedestrian was killed on Monday January 1 at Kamblapadavu Arkana within the limits of Konaje police station, after a Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) bus hit him while he was crossing the road. Some locals, holding Infosys Ltd as being responsible for this accident on account of unscientific road works executed by it, held protest on Tuesday January 2 by placing boulders across the road.
Moidin Kunhi (52) from Arkana, who was going towards Kuthar from his home for work was hit by a KSRTC bus that was moving to B C Road from Kasargod. The bus was overtaking a private bus that had stopped by the side of the road, when it hit Moidin Kunhi, who was crossing the road. Moidin, who suffered serious head injuries, died on the spot, leaving behind three daughters and three sons. He was a coolie by profession and the lone breadwinner of his family.
The protesters said that the road between Arkana and Kamblapadavu was laid unscientifically as a result of which accidents keep occuring at the spot. They demanded compensation of Rs 25 lac from Infosys, which is executing road works, to be paid to the family of the deceased. They placed boulders, blocked vehicles from moving on the new road, and demanded to take up road work in a way that is beneficial for locals.
Nasir Moidin Arkana, member of Pajeeru gram panchayat and Rafiq Pajeeru led the protesters. Konaje police visited the spot and convinced the protesters to end their stir.
