Bengaluru, Jan 2: Karnataka’s Human Rights Commission(KSHRC), which has remained headless since the last five years, is all set to get a new Chairman in former Chief Justice of Karnataka High Court.
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has finally succeeded in convincing Justice Waghela to head the KSHRC.
The Chief Minister chaired a meeting for finalising the selection and it was attended by Speaker K B Koliwad, Council Chairman D H Shankaramurthy, Opposition Leader Jagadish Shettar and Home Minister Ramalinga Reddy.
After the meeting, Siddaramaiah told press persons that the committee has appointed retired High Court Chief Justice Waghela as the Chairman of the KSHRC.
A panel comprising Speaker of Legislative Assembly, Home Minister, Chairman of Legislative Council and Opposition leaders both Houses of the State Legislature form the members of the committee to select the members of the commission.
State Governor Vajubhai Vala would appoint chairperson and members on the recommendations of the committee head by Chief Minister.
Justice Waghela started his own practice in 1978 at the Labour and Industrial Court.
In 1999, he was appointed as Additional Judge of the High Court of Gujarat.
He served as the Chief Justice of High Courts of Karnataka, Odisha and Bombay.
Justice Waghela was born in 1954 at Rajkot in Gujarat in the family of artists and artisans.
