Udupi, Dec 30: Deputy commissioner Priyanka Mary Francis flagged off ‘Green Campaign’ cycle rickshaw on Friday, December 29.
The event was organized by District Senior citizen committee in association with Sastan friends.
“Saving nature is an admirable task. Udupi is recognized as a model district in the State. It occupied first place in all round development. Waste management is a challenge the city faces. It is better to reduce waste generation and inculcate the habit of segregating waste,” she said.
Let us all use natural decorative items like flowers, leaves, in all functions, ceremonies. People should work in order to maintain greenery everywhere. It is important to save nature in true sense.
The District Administration will hand over the night shelter to two NGOs, Migrant workers Association and Sri Shakti Okkuta for maintenance. It was kept closed due to poor maintenance. A meeting will be conducted soon with the NGOs and CMC, said DC Priyanka.
Zilla Panchayat President Dinakar Babu said, “Organizing such green campaign programmes will help in beautifying the Udupi district even more”.
The forest department officer Devaraja Pana speaking on the occasion said, “the forest department is giving priority on saving water and nature. It is a good thing that many other organizations are joining hands in saving nature. Let us promote green revolution through such campaigns”.
“Trees are the power of nation. The green campaign which aims to cover all areas in 1.5 years will have members of the organization taking saplings and pamphlets in the cycle rickshaw,” said green campaign convenor H R Vinaya Chandra.
The cycle rickshaw is donated by Nityananda Olakadu. The campaign is initiated under the tag line ‘plastik tyagisi, pavitrayaga’ (denounce plastic and purify surroundings) aims in beautifying the clean city.
Members of Krishna Bai Vasudeva memorial Katpady and volunteers of NSS unit will also be joining this programme as part of annual camp.
