Bengaluru: My father is not guilty, says daughter of arrested tabloid editor Ravi Belagere

Bengaluru, Dec 9 (PTI): The daughter of a leading Kannada tabloid editor, who was arrested for allegedly hiring a contract killer to eliminate his journalist colleague, on Saturday said that her father was "not guilty" and would come out of the case "safely".

Ravi Belagere, who brings out 'Hai Bangalore', was arrested on Friday from his house in Bengaluru on charges of hiring a 'supari' killer from Vijayapura in north Karnataka to kill Sunil Heggaravalli.

"No one has filed an FIR in this case based on a complaint filed by someone. It is a suo-motu case by the police based on Shahi's (the contract killer) statement. There is no meaning in it," Bhavana claimed.

"I'm very confident, he (Belagere) is not guilty. He has not done anything and will be out of it safely very soon," she told reporters in Dharwad.

Bhavana said that she has been advised by lawyers not to issue statements on the case and that the evidence, the police have is just a statement and the case cannot stand based on it.

"My dad is a great man, he is a fighter, he will come out fighting," she added.

Belagere was produced before a magistrate at his residence on Friday night and was remanded in four days police custody.

The police stumbled on the alleged plot when the contract killer, Shashidhar Mundewadi, was being questioned in connection with the probe into the killing of senior journalist Gauri Lankesh, who was shot dead at her house by unidentified assailants in Bengaluru on September 5.

Official sources said that the City Crime Branch was questioning Belagere.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, commenting on the case, said that the police would do their work according to the law.

"I don't know. Police might have evidence, they will work according to the law," he said.

On Friday, Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Satish Kumar claimed that Mundewadi had stated during interrogation that Belagere gave him 'supari' to kill Heggaravalli.

Based on the inputs, Belagare was arrested and a pistol and a double barrel gun was seized from him, he had said.

Kumar also said that Belagere wanted to kill Heggaravalli for "personal reasons" and that an FIR was registered at the Subrahmanyapura police station.

Belagere was in news after the Karnataka Legislative Assembly passed a resolution sentencing him and Anil Raju, editor of tabloid 'Yelahanka Voice', to one year in jail.

Fines of Rs 10,000 each was also imposed on them for their alleged defamatory articles against state legislators.

The assembly had recently rejected a plea by both the journalists to reconsider its decision.

On a petition by the journalists, the Karnataka High Court had earlier this week directed the assembly not to pursue the proceedings until further orders.

The point here is not about whether Ravi Belegare is guilty or innocent. There is due judicial process to do that. The point is that there is blatant abuse of the law by the police in this instance and the apathy by the lower judiciary. If this is allowed to happen then even you and I can find ourselves in this situation tomorrow and nobody will be there to help us. This is pure abuse of power by the government machinery against the ordinary people. If that contract killer had narked to the police saying Siddaramaiah ordered Gauri's killing would they have arrested him on that basis? This issue is not between the government and a 3-rate journalist, instead it's between the government and the ordinary people. Please get this point inside your skull. Don't be biased because it's your favourite party ruling the state.

If the "confessions" from a police custody interrogation is used as evidence to arbitrarily arrest a person then the days will be not far away before our country turns into one of the former iron curtain shit holes of the cold war era.

To punish fake news, let the law makers bring a news about prosecuting those who publish wrong/inaccurate information which results in damage to reputation. Let there be crippling civil penalty. Nobody is against that.

More over, the wilful silence by the media on this issue is confounding.

    @ Henry James .....?????

Though I smell some FEKUISM here, with all humility I request you to read my views one more time by applying the best of best in whatever is inside your skull..., then assess your response to know whether there is any iota of relevance in your comment to my views..,

My intention was to make RB's Daughter to take note of wisdom full facts before pre-judging to say that her father is innocent and/or not guilty..., Under this context if in your opinion if we have to believe Daughter's statement..., then does she mean to say that her father did or didn't do certain acts of omission & commission at the behest of some one whom she knows very well...., if so there is more to do by her by drawing attention of law keeping forces of the land and bringing/placing such facts before the judiciary.

It seems the Government is determined to put Mr. Ravi Balegere behind bar for one or other reason. Arresting a person merely on the basis of an oral submission from a criminal, that too without corroborative evidence, is unheard in criminal jurisprudence. If this trend is settled, police can force a negotiated confession from a criminal and arrest anybody and everybody overnight. Controversial punishment imposed by the Privileges Committee of Assembly is objectively intervened by the Judiciary. Most of our elected members are having dubious background and, in the context of their privileges not defined, we all are living each day at their mercy. If this trend is allowed to precipitate, an MLA on road like an old king on safari can trigger a privilege motion. Present Government is redefining human rights in Karnataka and one more term to them will be suicidal to the citizenry. When your goat is stolen, aroma of soup from your neighbour's kitchen become suspicious.....! One more warning bell to the electorate when elections are the door.

Dear Paul, I do not have any special interest in this case. I reacted as a true citizen because it is blatant violation of human rights. You will understand the trauma when you or your family members are picked up on non-bailable offence based on a mere confession from a criminal during interrogation in police custody. Please note confession of a criminal in police custody have no evidence value in criminal jurisprudence. My point is that why cant police wait for corroborative or supportive evidence to settle in before arresting him? Why was this undue hurry.

    Jossey,

    Few things here...

1.Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Satish Kumar is the same person who was SP DK when church attacks happened...and all are saying Ganapati...Ganapati...nobody care who gave orders to Ganapati...and this CONgress Government wanted to bring him to Mangalore as Police Commssioner...till somebody told Lobomaam about it...

    2. If Shashidhar Mundewadi, in Police Custody says Modi gave Supari to kill Hafeez Saeed ...will Police file FIR against Modi and arrest him?

3.Statement given to Police in Police Custody has Zero evidentiary value...that statement has same legal value as of toilet paper ....

4.Problem with Indian Police from top to bottom ...none of them know law...they should be taught law and Constitution before appointing them in the Police Force...

5.If this case goes to High Court....I am sure HC will use same words it used for Palaih, DC Bangalore Rural District...

    ...JH...
