Mangaluru: Thousands of tonnes of milk powder getting rotten at KMF godowns

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (MS)

Mangaluru, Dec 9: If the milk powder that is lying in the godowns of Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF) is not sold within the next three to four months it might have to be discarded as the expiry date of the same will get over.

Fourteen milk federations have produced the milk powder from the surplus milk and stocked with the intention of selling the same. However, the marketing efforts of KMF have not yielded any fruitful results. Even the states of Andhra Pradesh and Gujarat, who used to buy milk powder from KMF, have not asked for any shipment this time around.

Right now there is a stock of 17000 tonnes of skimmed and unskimmed milk powder in the godowns of KMF. The powder that is produced since May 2017 has not been sold at all. This has got a shelf life of one year. The production of milk powder is continuing without any interruption on a daily basis. If any buyers wish to buy the milk powder now, they will ask for the new stock. KMF is clueless now as to what to do with the old stock.

KMF gets 77 lac litres of milk every day. Out of this, only 35 to 38 lac litres of milk is sold. A very meagre amount is used for the production of sweets. Rest is converted into powder form, as there is no other option, though this is a financial burden to the federation. Even the government schemes like 'Ksheera Bhagya' and 'Mathru Poorna' have not helped in selling this powder.

Rakesh Singh, managing director of KMF, says, "The shelf life of milk powder is one year. We have a list of stock held by different federations. Additional stocks can be used by other federations. I do not have any information with regards to the dumping of excess milk powder in the sea, that is expired and in stock with Shivamogga milk federation,”

KMF loses Rs 7 in manufacturing one kg of milk powder. Except for Kolar, Bengaluru and Mangaluru, other 11 federations are running under loss. Shivamogga and Mysuru federations are under a loss of Rs 8 crore and 48 crore respectively.

We have stocks of SMP from June 2017 onwards. Recently KMF had sold 3000 mts of SMP.

Now the stock is only 12000 mts of SMP and 1500 mts of WMP meant for schools.

Except for Mysore, no other Union is in loss. Mysore also it is matter of time by March 2018, it will recover...

    What a Shame..!!
World has moved forward into fully deriving value out of milk, and our KMF has no idea beyond sweets. Does KMF know a product called Cheeeeeesssseee????? It sells like hot cakes and it is very expensive. If they can help bring down the cost, it will start an altogether new culinary biz ecosystem around it. Cheese can be exported as well. KMF needs to stay abreast with the world.

What a bad management by KMF ? just on April 1, the milk price was increased by Rs. 2/- per Ltr.

When they knew that there is surplus produce, they should have reduced the price instead. On the other hand they are spending Rs. 7/- to powder and pack the surplus. If they had sold for a lesser cost all the milk could have sold and this Rs. 7/- would have not incurred.

Please let poor people drink the milk than you reach the stage that the milk powder may have to be thrown away.

People are consuming less milk coz its costly.. 40 rupees for one liter of milk...Atleast decrease the prices and let people consume more milk daily than making it into powder and storing it for a year...

Make 100g, 200g and 500g packs in attractive boxes. See how Amul is releasing in market.
Also all small boxes need to be packed in 5kg or 10kg carton box and release to market.

If you pack milk powder in gunny bags, it won't look good.

Milk powder is high in nutrition. There might be poorer countries with food shortages. You can send the powder there instead of destroying the same provided they are willing to accept it. With the number of children falling due to better family planning norms the demand for milk will shrink further in days to come.

    Not a problem
Put for sale offer "buy 2 get 1 free" immediately in malls or to whole sales
See the improvement, if still no progress change the offer to "buy 1 take 1 free"
Though loss, it will catch a good market share. With the progress in sales, rate can be improved, gradually.
This will avoid dumping and in the meantime, improve the market share also.
    Good luck
