Mangaluru,Dec 6: After a bus from Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation's (KSRTC) city division here met with an accident as a result of a private bus colliding with it at Heddurga in Alur taluk, Hassan district at around 3.30 am on Tuesday December 5, three passengers had died. This happens to be the most gory accident to have happened within the limits of this division, with the last gravest accident involving KSRTC bus having happened at Udane in 2009 in which five lives had been lost.
All the 32 seats of the non-AC sleeper bus of KSRTC which was going to Bengaluru from Manipal were full. Most of these passengers were injured, with those sitting in the front section suffering injuries of more serious nature. KSRTC officials blame recklessness on the part of private bus driver for this accident. They said that presence of mind exhibited by their bus driver ensured that more lives were not lost. Their driver, Dinkar, who is backed by ten years of driving experience, too was injured in this accident. He is known for being an efficient driver, the officials stated.
The private bus was trying to overtake another vehicle when it collided with KSRTC bus. The KSRTC bus driver immediately turned his bus to extreme left instantly before stopping short of the edge of the road. If the bus had moved over the road edge, it would have jumped into a deep stream, causing more deaths and injuries. Officials also said that many passengers confessed to them that they were saved because of timely action of the bus driver.
KSRTC offers compensations to families of deceased passengers in case of accidents. Divisional controller here, Deepak Kumar, said that KSRTC will also meet the treatment expenses of injured passengers.
Some people analyze that more accidents are being witnessed on national highway 75 between the city and Bengaluru of late because of despicable condition of a stretch of Shiradi ghat road. As the buses get delayed in negotiating this bad stretch, there is likelihood of them trying to make up for lost time later.
