Bengaluru: Denied his money, techie sets himself ablaze , dies

Bengaluru, Dec 6 (DHNS): A 35-year-old software engineer, who set himself ablaze in the course of an argument with the owner of a tutorial institute, has died of burn injuries.

Ritesh Kumar, a resident of Lal Bhadur Shastri Nagar in HAL, doused himself with petrol and struck a match. The flames engulfed him.

Ritesh worked for a company in Marathahalli, and lived with his wife Parul, son Dharsh and daughter Vidhi.

He had handed Rs. 2.5 lakh to Aditya Bajaj, owner of Aditya Tutorials in JP Nagar, seeking admission for his son at a school.

Bajaj neither got the child a seat nor returned the money. Frustrated, Ritesh carried a bottle of petrol to Aditya Tutorials on November 30.

Heated arguments ensued, and Ritesh poured the petrol on himself, telling Bajaj to set him ablaze if he couldn't return his money.

Seeking more time, Bajaj snatched the matchbox from Rithesh's hand and placed it on the table.

A desperate Ritesh picked it up and set himself on fire, police said.

Bajaj poured water on him, but Ritesh sustained severe burn injuries. In trying to rescue Ritesh, Bajaj also suffered burn injuries.

Neighbours rushed the two to Victoria Hospital, where the police obtained a statement from Bajaj.

Ritesh died on December 1. His wife Parul Mahansaria then lodged a complaint with the police, who booked Bajaj for cheating and abetment to suicide.

The couple wanted their son to study in National Public School, the complaint says.

When the couple did not receive any intimation from the school even a month after they had paid Bajaj, Rithesh began demanding his money back.

Bajaj gave him Rs 1.25 lakh and sought a week's time to return the rest of the money. But he didn't keep his word.

Bajaj dodged Ritesh, saying he was in no position to return the money, police said.

Ritesh threatened to file a police complaint, but decided to try one last time to get his money back, Parul told the police.

On November 30, Ritesh met Bajaj around 8 pm. At 11 pm, Parul got a call saying her husband had been admitted to Victoria Hospital.

She rushed to the hospital and saw both Ritesh and Bajaj in the same ward.

Techies finding difficult to get new jobs, salary cuts, life becoming miserable due to demonetization. But, expenses and commitments going up especially when you have family.

Then this frustration in getting his money back for his needs.

Poor chap lost life due to financial crisis. This guy might have been paying income tax while earning. Can central government take care of his family presuming he was a tax payer ? There is no such social security in our country. Pity !!! Governments only want income tax. Not bothered to look after tax payers.

Statues are more important than humans for political gains.

    Pinto Ji,

We can see your frustration in message. Incident happened in Karnataka and you are directly jumping in to central? What about state politics? Is state is not taking tax? Let his soul rest in peace.

    Hello Deepak,

Why you are commenting out of frustration ? I am talking on behalf of all "income Tax" payers. When they are on Job/Business they pay income tax. For salaried government even takes forcibly by TDS. Why government can't ensure any sort of insurance for social security or keep at least part of income for tax payer benefits in case of need ? Check what is happening all over the world & comment. Don't blindly support tax payers one way loot by governments.

By the way I have not commented about either BJP or Congress or any other government. I referred central government because Income Tax is collected by central governments. Central government may be BJP, Congress, AAP or Remix. Hope sense prevails. That's it.

@Pinto BLR,because one pays the tax,out of this incometax, you cant expect govt to pay for his family suppose he emblaze himself. It is understood when one works ,is supposed to save for his family,or meet the needed security n form of life insurance etc.Income tax is for common social works like schools, roads ,or hospital s to finanzes. There are so many projects to be finance from Govt.Afterall techies are earning pretty good.when you expect govt should finanz them and also poor at the same level then social system brakes completely. When he works,I am sure his firma also too extend some money to funds like provisionfund or not?certainly his family will get what there is.Afterall he emblezed himself not someone else.Hecould have waited for his money for some time.emblazed doesnt bring back money, and should have thought of his familys security.May his soul rest in peace.

Assuming an Indian techie is a educated person, it is quite shocking to read he killed himself as a last resort instead of taking legal action??

what is the fate of the remaining family members whom he so dearly loved, especially his little son?
