Mangaluru, Dec 3: As Arabian sea swelled due to cyclonic affect, two houses standing in Seaground area of Ullal got inundated. When people living in these houses returned on Saturday December 1 night after offering prayers at the church, they found that both had disappeared all of a sudden. The sea, which surged 200 metres into the seashore, obliterated the signs of existence of these two houses without a trace. Even the path to the houses was found to be in standing seawater.
Another house in the area suffered partial damages.
The houses belonging to Philomena Fernandes and Everest Alphonse were consumed by the sea. Although protective walls have been erected with boulders in the area, they could not offer resistance to the advancing sea. The family members had left at about 7 pm on Saturday by locking their homes to visit the church. When they returned at 10 pm, the sea had occupied their houses.
The family comprising Philomena, her husband, and son, were living in one of these houses. Along with the house, things valued at about six lac rupees also were vanished into the sea. In the other house, Alphonse and his wife were living, and things worth eight lac rupees inside the house went underwater. The other house that was partially damaged belongs to Avil. All these families have now left to live with relatives.
About 50 houses in Ullal area face danger from the sea and all these families have been shifted to safer areas. Most of them have chosen to shift to the houses of relatives. Revenue officials including tahsildar and police personnel visited the place and undertook measures.
