Bengaluru, Nov 30: Bengaluru has surpassed Mumbai in terms of crime rate and stands as the second most crime-prone metro in the country.
The 'Crime in India 2016' report prepared by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) and released on Thursday November 30, shows Bengaluru follows Delhi in crime rate among 19 metros having a population of more than 20 lac.
Among the states, Uttar Pradesh topped the crime chart for 2016, accounting for 9.5% of the total crimes committed in the country, followed by Madhya Pradesh (8.9%), Maharashtra (8.8%) and Kerala (8.7%).
Bengaluru reported 45,797 crime cases registered under the Indian Penal Code in 2016, while Delhi reported 1.99 lac and Mumbai reported 39,617 cases.
The report shows that there has been a steady increase in crime rate. In 2014, Bengaluru reported 31,892 cases and 35,576 cases in 2015. However, in 2016, the report shows a rise of 10,221 cases. Meanwhile, Mumbai in spite of having an active underworld has registered a decline of 3,323 cases.
When it comes to murder cases, Bengaluru stands second in the list. As many as 229 murder cases were registered in the silicon city. In Delhi 479 cases, Patna 195 cases and in Mumbai 147 murder cases were reported.
Bengaluru is not safe for women and comes in the top 5 metros where rape cases were registered. While Bengaluru reported 321 rapes, Delhi had the highest at 1,996 followed by Mumbai 712, Pune 354 and Jaipur 330.
As many as 1,333 cases of crime on children were reported. In cases of abduction and kidnapping, Bengaluru stood third with 879 cases.
