Bengaluru: Aged couple stabbed to death, LPG cylinder explosion plan fails

Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru (SP)

Bengaluru, Nov 29: In a barbaric act which appears to have been committed a couple of days back, a couple living at Ashwathanagara near Marathahalli here was found to have been stabbed to death. It has also been found that the killers also tried to set off LPG cylinder blast towards demolishing the entire house. But this plan apparently failed to materialize.

Govindan (75), a retired employee of Bharat Electronics Ltd, and his wife, Sarojamma (62), were the ones whose lives were lost in this incident. The murders came to light at 10 pm after the couple's daughter visited the house, said city police commissioner, T Sunil Kumar.

The couple has left behind daughter, Usha, and a son. One of their two sons had died sometime back, and the other is living somewhere else. Usha, who had earlier settled in Hosur, had recently shifted to HAL Layout here.

Govindan and his wife were staying in their own house at Ashwathanagara since the last three decades. They stayed in the ground floor and had rented out the first floor.

The killers who gained entry into the couple's house, killed the aged couple. After the people staying in the neighbourhood experienced smell of LPG emanating from this house on Tuesday night, they conveyed information to Usha. Usha came home immediately and found out that her parents were no more, things had been strewn around, and valuables had been burgled. The killers had cut the LPG pipe to let out the gas. The police said that they are yet to zero in on the actual purpose of killing, but added that there is suspicion about involvement of people close to the couple.

Usha stated that she had met her parents on Sunday and they had told her about their plan to visit a relative. So she said she did not visit them again. She came to know about the murder after visiting the home on Tuesday night on receipt of phone call from neighbour.

Govindan owned a house site in Whitefield, which was mired in disputes. The police are yet to find out whether this murder was committed in relation to this dispute or whether people who came in for robbery killed the couple. Investigation from all angles is being taken up, the police officers said.

City crime branch joint commissioner, Sathish Kumar, and deputy commissioner of police of Whitefield subdivision, Abdul Ahad, visited the spot and guided investigation. Sniffer dogs and finger print experts too got involved with the investigation. Ahad said that a special team has been formed to investigate this murder, and footage of various CCTV cameras is being pooled together. A case of murder stands registered in HAL police station.

    @Nayak Udipi Bangalore,how can you all of sudden say it is own grandson?Police have not yet give n the name of culprit.whether grandson had confessed to you or your own conclusion.It is bad to name one on media without proper proof,can bring problems.But one thing is sure,Either the couple had opened the door to the culprit ,and he/she then murdered them or known people had the key and came inside without their kowledge and surprised the couple.

    Now a days, in many houses only elderly people live. Whether it is good or bad, the children have to go out for employment in other cities or out of India, There is a fashion to say with pride that one's son or daughter is in USA, Canada, Australia, and some ones who are not that bright and remain with parents are considered third grade. Just read the following:
    Vinny: It is since so may years that we met. How are you and your children ? What are they doing ?
    Benny: My one son is in USA, other in Canada and daughter in Australia.
    Vinny: what about your last son ?
    Benny: He was not good at studies and he runs a shop near our house.
    Vinny: It is very bad, He has spoilt your family image, is it not ?
    Benny: I don't know what to say, please don't tell anybody, if he and his shop was not there, we would be starving.

    A very sad case.

    My strongest recommendation all the senior citizens:

    Keep a couple of dogs. Small expense, but great security.

    Crime against humanity is on the rise. Unemployment may be one of the reasons. The killers deserve only capital punishment. We can not blame the children as thats the necessity of present day to stay at different places. May their souls rest in peace.

    Other than the fact an elderly couple has been murdered, there is no other information such as:
    - Who committed the murder;
    - What were the circumstances leading up to that murder;
    - What was the motive behind the murder;
    - Etc. etc.
    AND, you have already passed a judgement that the killers must be hanged!!.

    Looking at the comments that people like you pass, I am actually glad that India does not have a jury trial. Otherwise people like you will enter the courtroom with a pre-conceived notion about guilt and sentencing. Thereafter any evidence presented during the trial will all be subject to your confirmation bias. What is the hope for justice then?

    I wonder if you are the criminal defense lawyer; and if so all murderers however gruesome the murder will go scott free the very next day of being arrested.

    After hearing of a gruesome murder if one does not need to say "the killers must be hanged" please teach to say something in support of these killers .

    Sorry to disappoint you, but I do not have a law degree. But I believe in application of logic rather than emotions to resolve various issues. That is why I would only say that police should investigate and nab the killers. I seek justice, not revenge. I believe in the constitution, not the bible.

    Having said that what is the crime or shame in being a criminal defence lawyer? Doesn’t a defence lawyer perform an important constitutional function of providing a fair trial to a person accused of a crime?

    Just look at the very recent case of Ryan school murder where the Haryana Police nabbed the poor conductor within one day, got a “confession” from him within days and slapped murder & sexual offence charges. The state home minster even promised to file the charge sheet within a week. You know very well as to what happened afterwards. That poor conductor could not afford a decent lawyer of his own. Had the CBI not taken over the case, the police would have “proved” their case since they already have a confession, “recovered” a planted knife and the “statement” of his bus drive that the knife was part of the tool kit. Is this your sense of justice?

    And this scenario repeats itself all the time all across India. Whenever there is pressure on the police to solve cases quickly, they will undoubtedly “solve” the cases quickly and some poor guy like driver, daily labourer, compounder, sweeper, etc. are arrested. And their only hope is that the judges make sense in the evidence presented. Did you know that between 2000 to 2015, 66% of trial court death penalty has been commuted by HC/SC and another 30% has been acquitted (yes, ACQUITTED). That means in two-third of the cases, higher courts did not agree on the sentencing; and on 30% of the cases, prosecution even failed to prove the crime. Is this your sense of justice?

    When my grandmother was staying with her handicapped daughters my mother took the responsibility to help her by taking a house near her house even though my grandmother was staying in a small village.My mother did not thought about her comport but just thought about her mother and handicapped sisters. Now we all brother sisters are in good health, and wealthy. This sacrifice of my mother is blessing from almighty to her children. I always think about my mothers sacrifice...... At present even one or two children the parents try to give them good education but most of the children are selfish and they want to stay away from their elderly parents...... the fate will be when parents want help, no one is there to help them. outsider will see the opportunity and just kill them to grab their wealth. shame on you present young generation.

    Hi Shan,

    I wonder do you even see the irony that you are making this comment sitting in Dubai?

    I can bet that your parents are still back home in Udupi / Mangalore region. If you think today's younger generation is selfish, why are you still in Dubai?

    The UAE State does not even treat you like a human being equal to their citizen. You are never given right to permanent residency even after 30 years of service; and once you lose your job, you have flat 30 days to vacate the country. Again, why are you still in Dubai if not for the lure of wealth that comes with working there compared to back home in India? Are you any different today's younger generation?

    Hi
    My parents died about 15 years back at the age of above 90... We brothers and sister made a arrangement to look after them until their death by staying one of brother sister or their close person to look after them. We used to go one by one go to their house to stay with them. Now we have my mothers younger sisters in our house and they are above 90 years age and we made the arrangement to look after them..... i.e. cook, and take them to hospital and stay with them until their death. The present days the children are not looking after their own parents.... but for your information we look after our handicapped aunts like our parents..... I don't think it is happening in present world. At present not only aunts even they put them in old age house and run away from responsibility .

    For your information the people who live in Sonapur are not working for any multinational, or Local companies...... these companies are run by only Indian, Pakistani partners. For Name sake they take local partner and pay them only yearly trade licence fee..... these Indian or Pakistani partners bring their native people for lowest salary and give them accommodation in Sonapur. For your information the people who are coming from India by paying money to Indian agent but not to UAE locals. Why if Indian is cheating Indian by taking money or pay them low salary or give them bad accommodation why are you blaming the country or their people????? I have seen in India i.e. Hyderbad give their girl child below the age taking money and marrying to some old fellow..... Why we have blame full India????

    "The UAE State does not even treat you like a human being equal to their citizen."

    May I ask you how are the Indian Dalits treated in their own motherland India???????

    for God's sake they are not allowed to draw drinking water from the well used by the other community. They are not even allowed to enter temples to worship God.

    So remove the log from your eyes it will help you to see better when you attempt to remove the speck of dust from another's eyes.

    Any human being is most welcome to draw water from my well. I have no problem with that. As far as the entry to temple is concern, which temple in our region are you referring to?

    Either way, what is the relation between UAE labour laws and the treatment of Dalits in India? The visa holders in UAE have the choice of returning back to India; but where exactly do you expect the Dalits of India to go?

    How is showing the plight of Dalits in India going to alter my view on UAE’s labour laws?

    Sorry, but I am missing the connection in your two arguments?

    UAE people are the best...... Just see their police and they are so helpful that any criminal activity than they will put them in jail but in India criminal and corrupt will come out within hours. In UAE all government offices will treat all people with same respect and no corruption here. The UAE has been ranked the happiest country in the Arab world for the third consecutive year in the UN World Happiness Report 2017. You know only udupi but better see other countries and have good or bad experience.

    My friend Rajesh,

    I have worked in five different countries, including Dubai for two years; and yes, I have travelled to many other countries too. So to your point, I have experienced the good and bad of many countries including Dubai.

    I have made Udupi my home because, I made a choice to live here; and not because I did not have a choice.

    I haven’t studied the Happiness Report you are referring to, but I will take your word for it. But did the people who did that survey visit the Sonapur labour camp? Or did they just talk to the white expats and GCC Arabs?
