Udupi: Pejawar Swamiji clarifies on Constitution remarks, calls for equal opportunities for all

Daijiworld Media Network - Udupi (HB)

Udupi, Nov 27: Reiterating once again that he did not insult Dalits or call for 'changing' the Constitution, Sri Vishweshateertha Swamiji on Monday November 27 said that people of all communities should be treated with equality and be provided with same facilities.

His comments regarding the Constitution during the just concluded Dharma Sansad had stoked controversy. There were protests and even a complaint filed against the Swamiji.

Addressing mediapersons here, Sri Vishweshateertha Swamiji said, "No one will be done injustice by reservations, so there is nothing to object. It is disappointing that some people have misunderstood my statement and are protesting. I have already said that I am not against reservations for Dalits. I am in favour of religious minorities getting facilities that religious majorities do. But Dalits are excluded from religious minority category. Only Christians and Muslims are included in this category. I also never said that facilities should be stopped for religious majorities. All facilities should be provided equally to all.

"Equal treatment to all religious groups will help Dalit-run education institutions in getting the benefits they need. Through this, Hindu maths and temples will become independent authorities like churches and mosques. Society should not be divided in the name of religion," he said.

"For that reason (giving minority status to Dalits), Constitution amendment is required. Many amendments have been made earlier in the Constitution. So if I suggest it, how can it be against the Constitution? How is it an insult to Dr Ambedkar? The Constitution was not drafted by Ambedkar alone. Alladi Krishnaswamy, K M Munshi, Benegal and others were also members of the Constitution drafting committee. Ambedkar was the chairman of that committee. The Indian Constitution was approved by more than 500 national representatives presided over by Dr Rajendra Prasad. If anyone insults the Constitution, it is equal to insulting the nation. I will not do such things. I wish to treat everyone equally in society without any discrimination. That is why I put forward this proposal," he explained.

"Being an advocate, Dwarkanath (former chairman of Karnataka State Backward Classes Commission) misinterpreted my words. He might not have understood what I meant. Cancellation or changing the Indian Constitution is condemnable," he said.

Speaking about schemes for minorities, he said, "Why is Shaadi Bhagya only for Muslims? There are poor people in the Dalit community too. They should also get the same benefit. We need to provide equality and study our Constitution better.

"I won't get into justifying on lingual differences the border area. I will not drag them into this controversy. I doubt if the writers of Kannada Sahithya Sammelana (who had protested) understood my points properly. They did not get any other points to raise against me. It seems as if people are searching for stones in curd now. They have misused the situation. I had said that reservation needs to be expanded to other communities also," he added.

"We had expected UP chief minister Yogi Adityanath to take part in Dharma Sansad but due to his election duty, he could not make it. Sri Sri Ravishankar Guruji also cancelled his visit due to personal commitments.

To a question on Iftar Koota that had been organized in Krishna Math last Ramadan, he said, "Iftar Koota is just a get together. There is no connection between Dharm Sansad and Iftar Koota. Dharma Samsad was scheduled a year before."

Throwing an open challenge to chief minister Siddaramaiah, he said, "If he is a true follower of Basavanna, let him ban cow slaughter and pass the anti-cow slaughter bill banning the consumption of beef. I do not know why the CM is objecting to my words."

On the issue of Ram Mandir, he said, "I respect the court order on Ram Mandir controversy. I hope that Ram Mandir work will start in 2018. The next elections results are also expected to be favourable to us," he added.

SC/ ST's are not daliths? Big time reservation goes to them. In education pass marks can get hem medical or engineering. Most government jobs they get in without competition and the result is most government documents like Adhar, Pan, birth death certificates come with spelling mistakes and error on dates. I guess reservation should go to only to economically backward classes and not too many benefits to drunkard in the family.

An amazing fact about the Indian Constitution adopted by the Constituent Assembly of India (CA) on November 26, 1949 is that out of 35 constitutional polities born after World War II, India is the only country which survives with its Constitution. All other countries fell prey to totalitarianism, civil war and military take-over. It is not that Indian democracy had smooth sailing, the constitutional structure had no infirmities and Indian polity was able to do justice to the Havenots but it is here that a Constitution based on liberal democracy and secularism continues to survive. Its emphasis on all-inclusive polity assuring social, political and economic justice was, in fact, continuation of the anti-imperialist legacy.

It took 2 years, 11 months and 18 days of hard work that CA adopted the Constitution on 26 November, 1949 and the 284 members signed the document when it was drizzling outside. It was also decided that the whole Constitution would be enforced on January 26, 1950 to be celebrated as the Republic Day.
However, there was a significant exception. The Hindutva camp led by RSS which had consciously denigrated anti-British freedom struggle mourned this historic achievement. THREE DAYS after the CA passed Constitution the RSS English organ, Organizer on November 30, 1949, in an editorial rejected it and demanded MANUSMRITI as constitution. It read:

“BUT IN OUR CONSTITUTION, THERE IS NO MENTION OF THE UNIQUE CONSTITUTIONAL DEVELOPMENT IN ANCIENT BHARAT. MANU’S LAWS WERE WRITTEN LONG BEFORE LYCURGUS OF SPARTA OR SOLON OF PERSIA. TO THIS DAY HIS LAWS AS ENUNCIATED IN THE MANUSMRITI EXCITE THE ADMIRATION OF THE WORLD AND ELICIT SPONTANEOUS OBEDIENCE AND CONFORMITY. BUT TO OUR CONSTITUTIONAL PUNDITS THAT MEANS NOTHING”.
It is unfortunate that that Pejawar who is founder member of VHP having such degradable on the constitution view. The leader who should be guiding force for the society seems more interested in politics than social upliftment.

One keen look at the outcome of Dharm Sansad....-

    - Cow to be declared as Naitonal animal
    - Every Hindu's must produce 4 children (in my view though men are ready..., modalities/legalities & economics of this task/clarification pending)
    - Total ban on Cow slaughter across Hindustan (No mention about much awaited ban on exports)
    - Building of Ram Mandir (good move & much awaited.., though pending since Shilanyas layed by Bharat Ratna Shriman Late Rajiv Gandhiji in late 1980's)
    - Equality among Hindu Denominations (this can be confirmed as achieved only when a Dalit purohit solomnise Brahmin Couples and the day we see Dalit purohits in Krishna Temple)

welcome add on if anything is missing...,

Guruji, what you meant is more important and not what you said. Your conscience will hold the mirror. Minorities had to survive without religious or political God fathers. And you find them as a favoured community, shows the small hearted Ness. You may be right, God will give the deliverance for such thoughts. Religious leaders ought to unite, not spew problems

he never commented against dalit reservation. He says that whatever benefit given to minority should also be given to majority. for example: the govt is interfered in temple management, there is a separate facility for minority institution etc. if the govt divide the people & provide facility based on religion then how we can justify that India is a secular country?

Dear Pircki, can u clarify what are the roles of "Wakf board" and Muzrai department". I think Govt. Should control properties registered under these boards to avoid local conflict and transparency. Other wise Babas and Swamiji's will open Swiss accounts.
