Mysuru, Nov 26: Former Prime Minister, H D Deve Gowda, criticized the way in which Pejawar Swamiji raised the topic relating to a letter written by a Archbishop from Gujarat to churches there seeking their support for a secular political party. The issue had been raised at the Dharma Sansad at Udupi by the Swamiji.
Expressing surprise that this topic was taken up for serious discussion thereafter, Gowda wondered whether the Archbishop does not enjoy the freedom of expression. Gowda insisted that personal views can be expressed by anyone, a right which is guaranteed as per the country's constitution.
He felt that it would be difficult for Kannada Sahitya Parishat to function without politics as politics has seeped into everything. He insisted that religious beliefs should be allowed to the personal choice of individuals.
Speaking at the 83rd All India Kannada Sahitya Sammelan here on Saturday November 25 after honouring achievers from various fields, Deve Gowda asked organizations to continue with their fight for issues like Kannada language, sharing of Cauvery river water, Mahadayi issue etc. He urged the activists to always ensure that the protests remain non-violent.
