No proposal to withdraw cheque book facility: Finance Ministry clarifies

New Delhi, Nov 23 (Agencies): The finance ministry today said there is no proposal to withdraw the bank cheque book facility as part of exercise to promote digital transaction.

The clarification comes in the backdrop of reports in a certain section of media that there is a possibility that the central government may withdraw bank cheque book facility in the near future, with an intent to encourage digital transactions.

Reports of a possible ban on cheque books had emerged after Praveen Khandelwal, secretary general of Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT), had told reporters last week, "In all probability, the Centre may withdraw the cheque book facility in the near future to encourage digital transactions."

This has been denied by the government and reaffirmed that there's no such proposal, the Finance Minstry said in tweets.

"The Government of India has reaffirmed that there is NO proposal under consideration to withdraw the bank Cheque Book facility," said one of the tweets.

Post demonetisation, the government has been pushing digital transaction with an aim to move towards less cash society.

Our Indian government is taking the some action without studying its affect. First educate the people step by step to use digital payment system. Keep one educated person on each panthayat to teach the people to use digital payment system..... than only introduce digital system slowly and step by step.

Pride has been dented after demonetization. In USA they still use cheques. However, the rich, the politicians and the crooks in India know how to deal with cash no matter what you do. Economy does not depend on Bullet train. Digitization could have very well been introduced even without demonetization and still with cheques.

Finance ministry realized that it would be a total disaster if they cancel cheque books and banks in underdeveloped or developing country like India. PM wanted cashless economy. People do not know what is cashless, bankless economy.
