Brief History of Church

The parish of Our Lady of Remedies, Kirem is situated 30 km to the north-east of Mangaluru, 10 km off the Arabian sea-coast. It is one of the most ancient parishes of Mangaluru diocese. Kirem is originated from the place called Quirem in Goa where a church dedicated to Our Lady of Remedies exists, and a Goan priest from this place came here as a missionary, and he named this place 'Quirem' and he built a church dedicated to Our Lady of Remedies. There are many opinions regarding how the word 'Kirem' originated. Accouding to one opinion, 'Kirem' derived from the word 'Kirant' (a blood sucking insect found in animals); another opinion is that the word 'Quirem' might have come from the word 'kere' (a lake in Tulu).

Till 1780, a Portuguese missionary used to visit this community to take care of the spiritual needs. In 1783, a bigger church was built. In 1784, a Goan priest came here. The newly built church was demolished by Tipu’s soldiers who took Christians as captives. There is a local tradition which says that local Bunts protected this church. Even today the local Bunts are honored by the parish during the parish feast.

There are some historical records pointing out the origin of Kirem. The Christians of this area requested a sale of land at Kadukambla of Aikala village for the construction of a church for Santa Maria. The parish of Kirem came in existence in the mid 18th century. With the dawn of 20th century the history of Kirem parish truly starts.

Kirem parish is the mother parish for many parishes surrounding the area. Many parishes were carved out of this parish, such as Kinnigoli, Kateel, Paladka and others.

I am elated to see the renovated Kirem Church. I was a regular visitor to this church while I was studying at Pompeii High School run by Kirem church. After 53 years I visited the church while attending a marriage party at Damaskatte. It was in last July, the renovation work was in progress. I took my handicapped son for blessing from god.

It is my understanding that the Goan Ecclesiastical administration - using the Portuguese transliterations for non-Portuguese words - referred to the church/parish as Quirem in the 1800s. There are church records to prove it.

The term used was Quirem (and not Kirem as this article says) in the mid 18th century.

The origin of the word - in this context - was almost certainly Goan Konkani (not Portuguese).

When Goan Ecclesiastical administration had to cease functioning around 1870 (in various parishes including Pezar, Bajpe, Quirem etc), the Verapoly administation priests took over. But the latter had no clue of the Portuguese language. They probably knew just Malayalam.

Hence, around that time, the transliterations of many words changed dramatically. Quirem became Kirem at this time.

It must be also noted that, progressively, during the 1800s/1900s, a large number of local place names were transliterated to English.

    On a separate matter:
The orginal (so far as I am aware) Nossa Senhora dos Remédios (Our Lady of Remedies) church is at Alfama, Lisbon, built before 1650.
There was a massive earthquake that flattened Lisbon in 1755. But Alfama did not get damaged (because it is situated on a gigantic rock).
The ordinary folks gave the credit to Nossa Senhora for saving them.
The chapel became very special to the Portuguese sailors and fishermen.

Quite a few churches built by the Portuguese outside of Portugal in the decades following the earthquake are named after Nossa Senhora dos Remédios.

Good that so many churches in and around Udupi & Mangalore are being rebuilt. It really makes a lot of difference to pray in a church which is new with good atmosphere, nice furniture, spacious interior, nice granite flooring, walls decorated with teak wood etc., Congratulations Fr. Victor DMello & the parishioner's of Kirem.

Of course this is not Tipu Jayanthi. But this church has something to do with Tipu. This is one of the churches that was protected by the Bunts from the atrocities of Tipu. Kirem and Pezar were the two churches in the region that existed during the reign of Tipu. While Kirem church remained functional, Pezar church was abandoned by the parishioners till the fall of Tipu.

Since 5 years I have seen new church buildings with new furniture. On this building or renovation the huge amount is spent. Our religion says feed the hungry and needy..... Should Churches Spend Money on Nice Buildings? Does god want beautiful buildings????
