Mangaluru, Nov 11: The twelfth graduation ceremony at St Joseph Engineering College (SJEC), Vamanjoor was held on Saturday, November 11 at the SJEC open air stage.
The ceremony witnessed the awarding of graduation certificates by the institution to the class of 2017 comprising 575 undergraduates (BE), 118 postgraduates (MBA, MCA, and MTech) and five doctoral degrees.
Dr Karisiddappa, vice-chancellor of Visvesvaraya Technological University – Belgaum, graced the occasion as chief guest and presented the degree certificates to the graduands. Richard Lobo, senior vice-president, head HR of Infosys Limited was the guest of honour. Fr Dr Aloysius Paul D’Souza, bishop of Mangaluru and president – SJEC, presided over the ceremony.
Fr Wilfred Prakash D’Souza, director of SJEC, welcomed the graduands from the class of 2017, dignitaries, and parents to the graduation ceremony.
Dr Karisiddappa congratulated the graduands on their successful graduation which marks the culmination of years of hard work, perseverance, and diligence. In his address, he appreciated the academic excellence and high standards of teaching and learning environment at SJEC. Wishing the graduates, a bright future ahead, Dr Karisiddappa spoke about the excellent technical education prevailing in Karnataka and invited the graduates to stay involved with SJEC and Visvesvaraya Technological University and contribute to the society and the Country.
Richard Lobo, in his address shared with the graduates three important facts. Firstly, even though the graduates have achieved education, the process of learning will continue. He further asked them to be ready to receive learning from unexpected quarters as they move on in life. Secondly, he asked the graduates to put in the hard work and not refusing to get their hands dirty will help them succeed in their chosen career. Thirdly, he asked the graduates to be updated on evolving technologies and to keep pace with the profession. Finally, he requested the graduates to be happy in life irrespective of career and other considerations.
Dr Rio D’Souza, vice-principal, SJEC, administered the graduation oath. Rithika Bekal, graduand from the Electrical and Electronics Department and Rahul D’Souza, graduand from the Electronics and Communication Engineering were the valedictorians from the class of 2017 and delivered the valedictorian addresses.
Scholastic achievers and sports achievers were recognized and awarded by Bishop Fr Dr Aloysius Paul D’Souza. Delivering the presidential address, the bishop congratulated the graduates and thanked the parents for their trust in choosing SJEC. The bishop thanked the management of SJEC and expressed his happiness in SJEC being awarded the ‘Best Performing College in the State’ (Projects) by the Karnataka State Council for Science and Technology – Bengaluru. He stated that, education is the key that opens many doors in life and asked the graduates to be focused and committed in achieving their dreams. He asked the graduates to imbibe good values, etiquettes, manners, commitment, and conviction in their life. He motivated them to be service minded people and the finest ‘Josephites’. The bishop concluded his address by appreciating the chief guest and the guest of honour for their presence and message to the graduates.
Dr Joseph Gonsalvis, principal, SJEC, and Fr Rohith D’Costa, assistant director, SJEC, were also present for the ceremony. Dr Ramananda H S, head of the department of Mathematics, and Evita Coelho, chairperson of SJEC Alumni Association, also felicitated the graduates.
Dr Kavitha K Mahesh, associate professor in the department of Computer Science and Engineering and convener of the Graduation Ceremony 2017 offered the vote of thanks.
