Udupi, Nov 10: "No rule makes it compulsory for district in-charge ministers to take part of in birth anniversary celebrations like Tipu Jayanti," said district in-charge minister Pramod Madhwaraj after his absence in Tipu Jayanti celebrations was highlighted by a section of the media.
Speaking to reporters, Madhwaraj contended, "I was absent even during the birth anniversary celebrations of Chittoor Rani Chennamma, Kempegowda, Bhagirathi and Valmiki. No one questioned me then."
When a reporter pointed out that Tipu Jayanti was a prestige issue for the government, Pramod Madhwaraj replied, "It is your imagination. People who want to create controversies will always do it. We cannot break our heads on those issues."
When asked about the unhappiness among Muslims about his absence in the celebrations, he said, "People have the right to express their views in democracy. I did not participate even in the last two years of Tipu Jayanti celebrations. I had a function to attend which was planned and determined much in advance. So I could not attend this programme."
On the question whether he skipped the programme intentionally as election was nearing and he did not want to be part of any new controversy, Pramod said, "Why should I do it intentionally? If you want to analyze me that way, I do not have any objection."
