Sangli, Nov 9: An accused, who was arrested in theft case. died due to suffocation, as he was allegedly made to hang upside down in water by the police of Sangli city police station. Later, the body of the accused was transported to Amboli ghat in a private vehicle and burnt by pouring petrol and diesel on his body. Six people have been arrested in this case.
This was disclosed by Vishwas Nangare Patil, special inspector general of police, Kolhapur range, at a press conference in Sangli. He said "This act of police personnel of Sangli police station is barbaric and stringent action will be taken against them. Involvement of more people from the police department is suspected in this case."
The accused police personnel, in this case, are Yuvaraj Kamte, sub-inspector, Sangli police station, Anil Laad and Arun Tone, Suraj Mullah, Rahul Shingate and Zakir Pattewale of Zero police.
According to the background of this incident, Sangli city police arrested Aniketh Ashok Kothale (26) and Amola Sunil Bhandare (23) in a case related to dacoity and produced them before the court on Monday, November 6. The accused were remanded to three days judicial custody. It is alleged that the police tortured the accused on the night of Monday and as a result of the third-degree torture Aniketh Kothale died at around 9pm.
Subsequently, the police took the dead body of Aniketh to Sangli government hospital for postmortem. However, the doctors at the hospital denied co-operating with the police. In the meantime, Dr. Deepali Kale, sub-inspector, who arrived at the Sangli police station enquired about the accused with Yuvaraj Kamte, sub-inspector, as they were not found in the custody. Yuvaraj Kamte gave a vague answer to Dr Deepali's query.
On the morning of Tuesday, Yuvraj Kamte, sub-inspector, disappeared from the Sangli police station after registering a complaint that both the theft accused have escaped from the custody.
Dr Deepali Kale, sub-inspector, who took up the investigation, traced the dead body of accused Aniketh at Amboli ghat.
