Tipu Jayanti celebrations: Prohibitory orders in Udupi district from Nov 9 to 11

Daijiworld Media Network - Udupi

Udupi, Nov 6: Deputy commissioner Priyanka Mary Francis has passed prohibitory orders under section 144 in the district from 9 am on November 8 to 9 am on November 11.

The orders have been passed to prevent any untoward incidents during Tipu Jayanti celebrations on November 10.

There are a few sensitive and highly sensitive areas in Udupi where some organizations are likely to protest against the celebrations. The prohibitory orders will be enforced throughout the district except places where government programmes will be held, the DC said.

The opposition parties have been up in arms against the state government over the celebration of Tipu Jayanti, with several BJP leaders condemning the Congress for playing 'vote bank politics'. BJP MPs Ananthkumar Hegde, who is also a union minister, Shobha Karandlaje and Nalin Kumar have already made it clear through the media that they would not attend the ceremony.

Just go through wikipedia of Tipu...copied from wiki....

The Captivity of Mangalorean Catholics at Seringapatam (1784–1799) was a 15-year imprisonment of Mangalorean Catholics and other Christians at Seringapatam in the Indian region of Canara by Tipu Sultan, the de facto ruler of the Kingdom of Mysore.[1] Estimates of the number of captives range from 30,000 to 80,000 but the generally accepted figure is 60,000, as stated by Tipu in the Sultan-ul-Tawarikh.[2] The captivity was the most disconsolate period in the community's history.[3]. It's cause is disputed, however it is generally agreed by historians[4] that it was purely due to religious reasons, as Tipu stated :

"To spare them was mercy, to honor them with Islam a favor. No fault being imputed except them being Christians."

The Mangalorean Catholic community in Mangalore flourished during the regime of Tipu's father, Hyder Ali. Soon after Tipu inherited the territory in January 1784, he issued orders to seize the Christians in Canara, confiscate their estates, and deport them to Seringapatam. His orders were carried out on 24 February 1784. Twenty thousand Christians died during the journey from Mangalore to Seringapatam. During captivity they suffered extreme hardships, torture, death, and persecutions with many Christians forcibly converted to Islam. Their captivity led to a near disintegration of the community[1] and ended only when Tipu was killed by the British at the Battle of Seringapatam on 4 May 1799, during the Fourth Anglo-Mysore War. Of the 60,000–80,000 Christians taken captive, only 15,000–20,000 both made it out alive and retained their original faith. The episode had a deep impact on the Literature of Mangalorean Catholics.[5] The bi-centennial anniversary of the Christians' release from captivity was celebrated across the region on 4 May 1999.

Sidhu should install a statue of Tippu in his house and perform abhisheka and pooja . He should celebrate Tippus birthday inside his house! Not by spending our money.

Even I don't support Tippu or any other leaders Jayanthi. Waste of time and Taxpayers money. Meanwhile an opponen invitation to all Tippu haters to check facts properly before complaining about his credentials and credibility. Every rulers tried to defend his kingdom and Tippu is not different. Come with proper historical facts before complaining. Else just keep quiet. It's none of your business.

Even as the ruling Congress party in the state is adamant about celebrating the birthday of the monarch on November 10 spurred in large part with an eye on Muslim votes – the BJP is organising anti-Tipu rallies and has declared the occasion to be a “black day”. In a mirror image to the Congress, the BJP hopes its stand will attract Hindu votes. “Very often the hero of one is a foe of the other,”

No matter how one looks at the record, it is true that Tipu Sultan’s father, Hyder Ali, informally usurped the throne of Mysore from the previous Hindu Wodeyar dynasty, where he served as a general. The Wodeyar dynasty had ruled Mysore since 1399, first as subjects of the Vijayanagara Empire and later as independent rulers after the fall of that state.
In 1791, therefore, the Marathas, under the command of Raghunath Rao Patwardhan invaded the Mysore district of Bednur. Here, they proceeded to sack the Sringeri monastery.
Attacking temples during war wasn’t exactly unusual (for example, the Maratha attack on the Tirupati shrine in 1759 is little remembered). But this was no ordinary place of worship. It had been founded a thousand years before by the father of Hindu Advaita philosophy, Adi Shankaracharya.

Of course, the past is a foreign country. There is no doubt that Tipu committed, what would be by modern standards, atrocities and war crimes. But so did the Marathas, in Sringeri. While Tipu’s violence was par for the course during his age, the mistake many modern-day readers do is to backread a modern communal motive to his actions.
In India, history is hardly ever neutral. Even bare facts and dates are often bones of contention. With the current atmosphere of tension and controversy on the role of Muslims in Indian society, some of the most contentious arguments over Indian history are those that seek to reevaluate the legacy of Islamic states in the subcontinent, largely at the behest of Hindu nationalists.

Sidharamayya is arrogant and wants to go ahead with this foolish idea of Tippu Jayanthi at any cost. He thinks muslims will be happy with Tippu jayanthi celebration. What benefit muslims will get by celebrating Tippu's birthday ?. In fact in Islam we are not supposed to celebrate any birthdays.
On the other hand Siddhu is hurting the feelings of Hindus and Christians. BJP will definitely benefit in the next assembly elections because of this Tippu Jayanthi.
There was absolutely no need for this kind of celebrations using government money.

Just so that History doesn't continue to be distorted -

Anglo Mysore Wars were 4 in number - the first two were fought with the leadership of Hyder Ali but with Marathas and Nizam also supporting him. Then, they turned turncoat.

The next two wars were fought with Tipu as leader from Mysore but by then Marathas and Nizam had sided with the British. Culminating in his martyrdom for the state of Mysore which is today Karnataka.
All actions of Tipu's Army was against whom it considered sided with the British, Marathas and the Nizam - to give a communal color is very dirty on part of this ideology supporter and some of the commenters here.

Are you for Indian Army's actions in Kashmir or against ? just this question will bring out the truth and actual patriotism.

Tippu was a murderer, rapist and robber. He murdered hundreds of thousands of Christians and Hindu's in the name of his mohemmedan religion. In fact, he committed genocide. He was not an Indian but a Afghan warlord bent on rape and pillage.

To honor his birthday is rubbing salt in the wounds of millions of Karnataka citizens who still remember the atrocities he committed. Thank God for the British who sent him to jenna.

Shame on the congress party for playing partisan politics. They have no decency.

    Dear Mr. Swamy

BJP was founded on 6th April 1980. The party was non existence during British Era. Please read the history properly and then comment. Tippu was fighting British not for Independence of India he was fighting for his survival. He was one of the most Tyrant ruler he used to punish people by pushing them from top of Hills. It's called as Tippu drop one in Nandi Hills near Bangalore and another in Jamalabad fort near Beltahngadi. He massacred 10000 and odd Christians in Mangalore. To commemorate this there is a big Cross erected in Nanthur, and that's why the place is called Nanthur cross.

Tipu is so popular that the Deputy commissioner Ms. Priyanka Mary Francis had to pass prohibitory orders under section 144 in the district from 9 am on November 8 to 9 am on November 11 ? What????

If the people have to celebrate the birth anniversary of this "great man" then people should spontaneously come on to the streets to celebrate his birthday with pomp and splendour for this one and only "freedom fighter". This all does not add up, don't the authorities know that?
