Great job by Ms Roche. Congratulations on the award for the AIR team.

The word "siddi" most likely has come from the colloquial North African Arabic (not standard Arabic) word "si-idi" which is equivalent to "mister". This is not the same word as Sayyid (an honorific address) or Sahib - a Persian word derived from an Arabic word.

In North Africa, ordinary people (men rather) just use the word si-idi to address one another when they do not know the person's name.

This usage may be likened to how the Gulf Arabs address any stranger as 'Rafeeq' (friend).

(On a separate matter, so far as I know Arabs do not name their child as Rafeeq. It is mainly the Muslims of the subcontinent that use it as the first name).

Portuguese sailors, at least in the 15th/16th centuries, were very familiar with the North African Arabic. It was the Arab navigators that guided the Portuguese to India, and the Portuguese ships anchored only where the Arabs had already settled for trade etc.

So I won't be surprised that they used the term si-idi to address the East African men. And the name stuck for the community.

PS: I have some familiarity with the North African Arabic.
