Neelamani Raju to be state's first woman DG&IGP

Bengaluru, Oct 31 (DHNS): The state government has appointed 1983 batch IPS officer Neelamani N Raju as the new DG&IGP. She will succeed R K Dutta. With her appointment, Karnataka will get its first woman DG&IGP.

She hails from Roorkee, Uttarakhand. Her husband Narasimha Raju is a retired IAS officer.

She was on deputation to the Centre for 23 years and had returned to the state about two years ago.

Neelamani had submitted a request to the state government, expressing willingness for Central assignment after Dutta became the DG&IGP. However, about two weeks ago, she met the chief minister and submitted another letter, withdrawing her previous request.

She is senior to two other IPS officers who were in the race - H C Kishore Chandra, DGP (CID) and M N Reddi, DGP (ACB). The chief minister finally decided to consider seniority for the appointment.

With her appointment, the chances of Kishore Chandra and M N Reddi to become DG&IGP have become bleak, as they will retire from service before her superannuation.

About a week ago, Home Minister Ramalinga Reddy and Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister T B Jayachandra prepared a shortlist of five officers considering their backgrounds, track records, achievements and performances and submitted it to the chief minister.

Till Monday night, the government had favoured Kishore Chandra for the top position as he is a Kannadiga and because there will not be any Kannadiga in the post of DG&IGP till 2030.

Congratulations, Ms. Neelamani Raju, on your elevation to the coveted, highest post in the heirarachy of DG&IP of Karnataka State Police.

With a fairly long tenure in your new posting in your favour, the amount of good work (tightening of the lax police establishment, making them more responsive & fast in solving the law & order and crime issues, combating corrupt practices in the police force, trying to improve the working and living conditions of the police force, etc.) that you can possibly do, is simply huge.

Very often, in a highly politically corrupt/interfering environment, challenges to the honesty and integrity of the police heirarchy will be great, which have to be resisted to the extent possible.

Wishing you, Madam, all the best, good luck & success, in your new, most challenging assignment.

There is no need to mention about the gender, caste, creed etc. to be the first in top position. India is a democratic country and all are equal, especially, the men and women. We are exposing our biased mindset about the women as if men have a favor to them.

I dont care who is the senior officials in the police. I only care that our police do their proper duty first and protect its citizens. Normally i see them running behind politicians, cattle and they do a little moral policing for a change.

It is good move. Having a woman as the State's top-most IPS officer sends a clear message to the women that Siddaramaiah government is committed to empowerment of women.
