Beltangady, Oct 29: In a tragic incident, a woman allegedly committed suicide along with her two children at Kalenja here on Sunday October 29.

Jayalaxmi (27), a resident of Barengaya at Moodarugudde in Kalenja, jumped into a well along with her children, three-and-a-half-year-old Deekshith and a six-month-old baby.

Jayalaxmi was the wife of Umesh Gowda, son of Dombayya Gowda.

Jayalaxmi, who hailed from Nelyady, got married to Umesh five years ago. She had been to her parental house for her second delivery some months ago, and came back to her husband's house for Diwali.

At the same time, Umesh who works in Kerala had come down for Diwali, and returned to Kerala about three days ago.

On Sunday morning, Deekshith was playing with other children in a neighbour's house, and had food there. When Jayalaxmi came to take him away for lunch, the neighbours reportedly told her that he had already eaten. Jayalaxmi nevertheless took him back to her house, it is said.

With Umesh's mother having gone out to hospital and his father away in his plantation, there was no one else at home. When they returned, they realized that Jayalaxmi and her children had gone missing. On searching the surroundings, they found the bodies in the well.

The exact reason for taking the extreme step is not yet known.

The Dharmasthala police were immediately informed. Beltangady tahsildar and police personnel rushed to the spot and the bodies were retrieved. A case has been registered in a Dharmashtala police station.

All problems can be solved without resorting to suicide. She should have spared her children atleast. May their souls rest in peace.

After the delivery of a child, for months, women are known to go through terrible depression.

This may be caused by the demands of the new child, and the resultant loss of sleep.

Unfortunately there is no support/education in the society for women who have delivered a child to cope with the post-natal depression.
