Mangaluru, Oct 29: The political ramifications of an incident in which city mayor, Kavita Sanil, allegedly manhandled the wife of the watchman of an apartment complex at Bijai in the city where she lives, relating to controversy over bursting of firecrackers, have led to the mayor filing murder attempt case against the wife of the said watchman. She has accused the woman of trying to murder her daughter.
In a complaint filed in Barke police station on Saturday October 28, Sanil named watchman, Pundaleek and his wife, Kamala, as the accused. "I noticed burn mark in the leg of my daughter on October 26. When questioned, my daughter revealed that it was caused by the son of the apartment's watchman, when he placed hot metal wire of a sparkler that had just been burnt on her leg in the parking lot of the building. She told me that when she questioned the boy about this behaviour, he ran away.
"His mother, Kamala, who witnessed this incident, caught hold of my daughter's neck, slapped her on her chin and warned of killing her if she tried to meddle with her son. My daughter bit Kamala's hand, got released from her clutches, and ran away. Kamala chased her, buy my daugher escaped from her and got shelter in the house of Gopal located across the road. As my daughter told Gopal's family that she faced threat to her life, Gopal accompanied my daughter home," she said in her complaint, based on the version of the incident as explained to her by her daughter,"
Kavita claimed that she was not at home at that time as she was busy with her duties as mayor of the city. She said her daughter narrated about the incident after she came home. She stated in her complaint that when she went to question Kamala about this incident, both Kamala and her husband threatened to kill her daughter.
Barke police said they have registered a case and are investigating the same.
On Saturday, both BJP and Congress held separate press conferences to accuse each other relating to this controversy. Dakshina Kannada district Congress Committee president, Harish Kumar, termed the allegations being levelled against Kavita Sanil as part of conspiracy hatched by the BJP. He said Kavita was not at fault in this incident, and therefore, there is no necessity for her to resign from her post. Addressing a press conference, he charged a BJP corporator and block president of BJP of making false allegations against the city mayor.
