Thiruvananthapuram, Oct 27: Akhila Ashokan alias Hadia (25), a homeopath, had married Shafin Jahan and converted into Islam last year. After her father filed suit in the state high court, contending that his daughter had been forcibly converted into Islam and her friends had forced her to convert, Kerala high court had concluded that Shafin Jahan had terrorist links. It had held the marriage illegal and given the girl back to her parents for protective custody.
On Thursday October 26, a video which was reportedly shot by an activist named Rahul Eshwar on August 17 this year, was released. In the video, Akhila can be heard pleading to get her out of the house lest she might be killed. "You have to secure my release from here as otherwise my death might happen anytime, within a day or two. My father is agitated. He thrashes and kicks me when I walk. I am afraid I might die after my head or some other sensitive part hits hard object," she can be heard pleading in the video.
It may be recalled that the Supreme Court has ordered National Investigation Agency (NIA) to conduct a probe to find out about the prevalence of 'Love Jihad' concept, particularly in this case. It also had expressed surprise at the fact that a marriage between adults had been annulled by the high court.
In the previous video released by the same activist, Hadiya could be heard wondering whether that was how she was meant to live. It is said that she has been confined to her house since the high court gave her to the custody of her parents. Police officials guard her house outside all along.
