Mangaluru, Oct 26: Police personnel of the city crime branch here have succeeded in taking into custody the accused who was involved with knocking down a policeman on duty near Marakada Junction within Kavoor police station limits with his motor bike and injuring him besides obstructing him from discharging his duties.
Police inspector of the city north traffic subdivision, Manjunath, was on duty near Marakada Junction within Kavoor police station limits during the period the chief minister of Karnataka was to visit Dakshina Kannada district on October 22. At around 6.30 pm that day, a motor bike driven by a person who was found to be not wearing a helmet from the direction of Bajpe, was signalled by the police inspector and a constable to stop. The bike rider suddenly rode the motor cycle towards the constable who was signalling him to stop, identified as Cheluvaraj. After hitting and injuring Cheluvaraj, the man sped away with his motor bike.
Injured Cheluvaraj was admitted into A J Hospital here as inpatient for treatment. On the basis of complaint made by police inspector, Manjunath, a case was registered in Kavoor police station and investigation was taken up. The city crime branch police who took up the matter, identified the culprit as Abdul Muneer alias Muneer (22), son of Abdul Razack, living near Shantigudde mosque, Bajpe here. He was taken into custody on Wednesday October 25 and handed over to Kavoor police station.
The police have found that Abdul Muneer faces a total of ten cases relating to chain snatching and motor bike thefts. He also was named as accused in the murder case of Ganesh Shetty in the district prison prison here during the year 2015. He had secured release on bail three months back, and a rowdysheet has been opened in Barke station against him, the city police said in a press release.
The special operation to find out and arrest the accused was conducted by officers and staff of city crime branch under the guidance of city police commissioner, T R Suresh, deputy police commissioner (law and order), Hanumantharaya, and deputy commissioner (crime and traffic), Uma Prashanth.
