Bengaluru: Tipu Sultan died historic death fighting British - President

Bengaluru, Oct 25 (IANS): President Ram Nath Kovind on Wednesday said the erstwhile Mysore ruler Tipu Sultan died a "historic death" fighting the British and called him a "pioneer" in the development of Mysore rockets in warfare.

"Tipu Sultan died a historic death fighting the British. He was also a pioneer in the development of Mysore rockets," Kovind said addressing the legislators in the Karnataka assembly at a joint session to mark the diamond jubilee celebrations of Vidhan Soudha, the state legislative building.

Recalling the contributions of former Mysore and Karnataka rulers, soldier, politicians and scientists in the growth of the state and the country on the whole, the President spoke of Tipu, leading to a majority of the legislators breaking into loud applause.

The President's words on Tipu Sultan come just few days after Union Minister Anantkumar Hegde, a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader, had called Tipu a "brutal killer, wretched fanatic and mass rapist", ahead of the state's Tipu Jayanti celebrations to mark the erstwhile ruler's birth anniversary on November 10.

The ruling Congress in the state began celebrating Tipu's birth anniversary since 2015, which led to violent protests by the right-wing organisations in the Mysore region and other parts of the state. The BJP in the state has been opposing the celebrations calling Tipu "anti-Hindu and anti-Kannada".

Known as the 'Tiger of Mysore', Tipu Sultan ruled the Mysore kingdom from 1782-1799 succeeding his father Haider Ali.

Full speech of the President

Today is a memorable day for parliamentary democracy. I address this august Karnataka Legislature as the 14th President of the Republic of India on the occasion of the diamond jubilee of the Vidhan Soudha. Personally also, it is a memorable day as I took oath as President of India in the presence of both Houses of Parliament on this very day, three months ago, that is 25th July, 2017.

This is my first visit to Karnataka since accepting the responsibility of the President of India. I have come on an occasion that celebrates the democratic traditions of our country and of this state. Today, we are commemorating the diamond jubilee of the Vidhan Soudha, the seat of the legislature in Karnataka. It was inaugurated in October 1956 by the first President of India, Dr Rajendra Prasad. I am humbled to be following in his footsteps. It was my privilege to have served as Governor in the state of Bihar, the home-state of Dr Rajendra Prasad.

It is not just the 60th birthday of this building that we are marking. This is also the diamond jubilee of the debates and discussions in the two Houses, of legislations that have been passed and policies that have been shaped for the betterment of the lives of the people of Karnataka.

We are aware of the three D’s of the legislature, that it is a place to debate, dissent and finally decide. And if we add the fourth D, decency, only then does the fifth D, namely democracy, become a reality. The legislature is an embodiment of the will, aspirations and hopes of the people of Karnataka, irrespective of political belief, caste and religion, gender or language. It needs the collective wisdom of both Houses of the Legislature to fulfil the dreams of our people.

This spirit of debate and discussion, of inquiry and of service, is not limited to simply the Vidhan Soudha or to political life. It has existed in the soil of this great state. Karnataka has been known through history for spiritualism as much as science, for its farmers as much as its technologists. Its contribution to the intellectual and cultural – and ultimately democratic – heritage of our country has been enormous.

This is a land with ancient Jain and Buddhist traditions. Adi Shankaracharya founded the math in Sringeri in this very state. Gulbarga is a centre of Sufi culture. The reformist Lingayat movement under spiritual leaders such as Basavacharya was also located in Karnataka. In their own way, each of these currents has contributed to nation building.

Karnataka is a land of formidable soldiers. Krishnadeva Raya was the greatest ruler of the Vijayanagara Empire, and remains an inspiration for all Indians. Kempe Gowda was the founder of Bengaluru. Rani Chennamma of Kittur and Rani Abbakka led among the earliest battles against colonial powers.

Tipu Sultan died a heroic death fighting the British. He was also a pioneer in the development and use of Mysore rockets in warfare. This technology was later adopted by the Europeans. More recently, two of our finest army chiefs – Field Marshal K.M. Cariappa and General K.S. Thimayya – were sons of Karnataka.

This is also the seat of education, technology and science. The engineer-statesman M. Visvesvaraya was a builder of modern Karnataka and of modern India. He was responsible for major irrigation projects that continue to help farmers to this day. The Indian Institution of Science and the Indian Space Research Organisation are among so many of our crown jewel institutions that are based in Bengaluru. The dynamism of its entrepreneurs has made Bengaluru India’s IT capital. It is known the world over as the Silicon City.

Both Houses of the Legislature jointly and collectively represent the will and aspirations of the people of Karnataka. Not just that, the two Houses also represent the ideals and optimism and the energy and dynamism of the Kannadiga people. This building is a monument to the history of public service in Karnataka. A galaxy of political stalwarts has participated in the proceedings of the two Houses that meet here. They have spoken in many memorable debates.

Today’s events will honour the families of the first three chief ministers of Karnataka – K.C. Reddy, Kengal Hanumanthaiah and Kadidal Manjappa. There are so many other names we must recall and cherish –S. Nijalingappa, Devraj Urs, B.D. Jatti, who later became Vice-President of India, Ramakrishna Hegde, S.R. Bommai, Veerendra Patil, S.M. Krishna and of course our former Prime Minister and my friend, Shri H. D. Deve Gowda.

It is for the current members of the two Houses to take forward the legacy of these remarkable public representatives. It is for the Legislative Assembly and the Legislative Council to function as sacred temples of democracy, and contribute to raising the level of political and policy discourse.

A member of the House is elected by his or her voters. But once elected, the MLA or MLC represents the entire constituency, and not just those who have voted for him. The legislator equally represents those who did not vote for him or in fact those who opposed him.

A rival in an election is a political competitor and not an enemy. After the election, the competitor could become a colleague in the task of ensuring the well-being and development of a constituency or of our shared society. This is the beauty of a democratic polity that we must appreciate.

The opening of this building in 1956 coincided with the reorganisation of states and the creation of the boundaries of Karnataka state. In a sense, both these momentous happenings represented the sovereign will, the cultural and linguistic pride and the identity of the Kannadiga people. As such the people of this state are always the focal point of all our endeavours – and of all that is undertaken in this legislative building.

Having said that, Karnataka’s dreams are not for Karnataka alone; they are dreams for all of India. Karnataka is an engine of the Indian economy. It is a mini-India that draws – without losing its cultural and linguistic distinctiveness – youth from all over the country. They come here for knowledge and for jobs, and they give their labour and intellect. Everybody gains.

There was a time when Hampi, here in Karnataka, was one of the richest and greatest cities in the world. Today, as our country strives to regain its importance in the global economy and international system, once again we look to Karnataka to provide India with the enlightenment, the technology and unity of purpose to take us forward. And as representatives of the people of Karnataka, the members of the two Houses here have a special responsibility.

Legislators are both public servants as well as nation builders. Indeed, anybody who performs his or her duties with honesty and dedication is a nation builder. Those who maintain this building are also nation builders. Those who provide it security are nation builders too. It is by the efforts of ordinary citizens, who diligently carry out everyday tasks, that nations are built. As you sit and work in this Vidhan Soudha, I am confident you will never forget this and will continue to draw inspiration from it.

Let us then make this diamond jubilee not just the celebration of a proud past – but a commitment to an even greater future. A great future for Karnataka and a great future for India!

He did fight the British, but he fought them for his own survival, and that was no act of patriotism. If he was patriotic as it is suggested he would have formed alliances with the Indian rulers of the day, but nay he also fought the Nizam of Hyderabad, he imprisoned the Raja of Mysore and he also fought the kings of Travancore.... oh, weren't these all Indians? Why did he fight his fellow Indians and usurp their lands. He murdered in cold blood ten's of thousands of innocent, defenceless both Christians and Hindus both young and old, men, woman and children. In places where he had an advantage and where he needed Hindus, he showed hog-wash support for them.

Yes, it is true that within Tipu's palace grounds there was a temple and in it resided a Hindu Brahmin priest cum astrologer. Though Tipu was a Muslim he was very superstitious, and he firmly believed in astrology, that he consulted this Brahmin astrologer each and every day and based on his recommendations he would act. On account of that he allowed a temple and a Brahmin priest to reside in it. Today, this is show as Tipu's tolerance towards the Hindus and this is a big fat lie.

He did fight the British, but he sided with the French and Portuguese to fight alongside with them against the British. If he was a freedom fighter he should not have befriended the French and Portuguese, instead he should have fought them too.

The President merely mentioned the name of Tipu along with Krishnadeva Raya, Rani Abbaka, Rani Chennamma, etc. who all fought against the colonial rulers. There’s no doubt he died a heroic death and was a pioneer in the development of rockets. This is just a positive side of Tipu. Likewise the President also praised other prominent personalities of the state. He avoided mention of Tipu’s atrocities without which history is incomplete. Negative aspects of Tipu were wisely not included in the President’s speech in order to avoid embarrassment. Even otherwise the president did not come to speak on Tipu alone.

For all the respected readers here, who are critical of the Presidents speech, please remember he is the President of the Indian republic. He doesn't write his speeches just like that. These speeches are written approved and then spoken. Which means he didn't just speak whatever he wanted to speak.

Moreover, I also read one of our dear reader writing that the first war of Indian Independence started in 1857. True it started in 1857, but was a organised war. Let us not undermine the sacrifices of scores of our valiant soldiers, Kings, Queens, who died fighting for freedom, before 1857.

Although a few of them fought other invaders, they still fought for our freedom. Collectively if all our freedom fighters didn't sacrifice their lives, we would still be fighting for our freedom. Perhaps then and only then, we would live collectively as a nation and not be divided as Hindu's Muslim's Christians, etc. We wouldn't take our freedom for granted.

We blame the British for the divide and rule policy, but what about our own politicians. They too are doing the same. Let us all kill our ego and live lives that will keep our conscious clear and let us all live in peace.

His wrath was against the whole community, for the sins (?) of a few who might have assisted the British. He rounded up all the Christians without discrimination, young or old, even my great great grandfather who was 14 in 1784. And do you not call that revenge attack? Tippu fought because he was cornered in the fight; otherwise he would have had the same fate as the Mysore raja's heirs who he had imprisoned for life. What heroism is that? Hitler was his role model; some revisionists will celebrate Hitler's birth (or perhaps death) anniversary,
With all respect to the President, he played into the hands of the Karnataka CM.

Tipu Sultan deployed the rockets against advances of British forces and their allies during the Anglo-Mysore Wars, including the Battle of Pollilur and Siege of Seringapatam. He also embarked on an ambitious economic development program that established Mysore as a major economic power, with some of the world's highest real wages and living standards in the late 18th century.[8]

Any guidelines/vision on Taj Mahal of Agra?
Some political leaders need to be educated on Indian history.
Given a chance for BJP to rule another 5 years, surely half of the history will be replaced with BJP/VHP/RSS ideology.

He was a real warrior and winning against British twice is not at all an ordinary feat ....and he massacred many locals who were back stabbing him and not support him against the british . Everything is fair in war i guess

Tippu ignited the flame of Independence which ultimately brought our slavery of British to end.

Tippu was not a religious Muslim King, a simply a ruler. While he contributed greatly to temples, there is not one Muslim place of worship which can be called grand by any means.

He fought with his enemies and adversaries on the battlefield. Most of his commanders in chiefs were Non-Muslims and he never led an Muslim army as such in any battle whatsoever.
