Mangaluru, Oct 24: A person who has been accused of taking part in several criminal cases including murder, was thrashed by the general public in the presence of police personnel. The incident happened during late night on Monday October 23.
The man who faced the ire of the mob has been identified as Abdul Mutalib alias Muthu (22). He had been named as accused in Raju Kotian murder case. Thereafter, he had succeeded in getting bail, following which he allegedly used to harass and intimidate people besides giving trouble to individuals in various ways, in addition to damaging and destroying houses and shops of the people. Since sometime, he had gone underground and hence was not to be seen.
After coming to know that Mutalib had come back home on the evening of Monday, a large crowd had gathered in front of his residence. After learning about this development, a police team led by Ullal police inspector, Gopikrishna, reached the spot. The police took Mutalib into custody and led him out of the house to take him to police station. The 300-strong-crowd, which jostled to get access to Mutalib, shouted at the police, demanding him to be handed over to them. They succeeded in snatching Mutalib from the police and beating him up badly. In this melee, one of the policemen, Basavaraj, too suffered some injuries.
Injured Mutalib stands admitted into a private hospital at Deralakatte. A case about the incident stands registered in Ullal police station.
