Mangalore, Jun 9:  The Congress has a strong base at the gram panchayat level, which increases its chances of winning the MLC by-poll, said former minister and district Congress committee (DCC) president Ramanath Rai, on Monday, June 9.

Nityananda Mundodi, former president of Sullia block Congress, is the party’s candidate for the MLC by-elections. Mundodi is a public figure and has been working for the welfare of the locals for many decades.

Speaking to media persons, Rai reiterated that though the Congress had weakened at the city and municipal levels, its strength at the gram panchayat level presented it a good opportunity at the forthcoming by-elections.

Members of gram panchayat, taluk panchayat, zilla panchayat, and municipal body of Udupi and Dakshina Kannada (DK) district will participate in this election. DK district has a total of 3,465 voters while Udupi district has 2729 voters, Rai informed.

Meanwhile, Mundodi said that the Congress had consistently won this seat, thereby making him confident of yet another victory this year.

Mundodi (54) has a degree in mechanical engineering and has been a progressive agriculturist. He has also served as secretary of the DCC, state vice-president of Jaycees, founder president of Venkataramana Credit Co-operative Society, and founder president of Malnad Education Trust.
