Udupi, Nov 29: The Malekudiya community, a scheduled tribe from Udupi’s Western Ghats, is demanding urgent government action for their development.

On November 29, community leaders submitted a memorandum to the Karnataka Chief Minister, outlining their grievances and the lack of basic amenities in their region.

Shridhar Gowda Edu, president of the State Malekudiya Association, said, “The community is struggling. Since the 2013 encounter of Naxal leader Vikram, fear has gripped the region. Basic facilities like roads and electricity are still unavailable, and the government has failed to act. The community supports the government, but in return, we need essential amenities and development.”

Edu also highlighted tensions with the authorities, stating, “After the encounter, police detained a local under the guise of an investigation. It was only after we threatened protest that the individual was released. If this continues, we will take a stand.”

Gangadhar Gowda, president of the District Malekudiya Association, demanded Rs 100 cr for regional development, noting that only Rs 1 cr has been allocated so far.

“The community faces severe deprivation in basic services, education, and employment,” he said. “The forest department offers reservations for the tribe, but it should extend to all government sectors. Meanwhile, projects like the Balottu bridge remain stalled, and funds under the Naxal package lack transparency.”

Despite repeated appeals, Gowda claimed only 10 percent of their demands have been met. “The community urgently needs government attention and action to ensure its well-being,” he added.

The press conference was attended by key community leaders, including Sudhakar Gowda Nadpalu, former president of the District Malekudiya Association, vice-president Shobha, general secretary Ashok Kerwashe, and spokesperson Dinesh Gowda.
