Puttur, Sep 25: Chairperson of Karnataka State Commission for Women, Nagalakshmi Bai, paid surprise visit to the government hospital here, expressed her resentment at the way things are moving, and took officials to task.
She had paid this visit in view of complaints from people about lack of cleanliness, handling of patients and the functioning style of hospital staff.
Speaking to media persons, Nagalakshmi said that she was under the impression that people of Dakshina Kannada give importance to cleanliness but her notion has evaporated into thin air now after visiting this hospital. "There is of course shortage of staff here. The hospital lags behind both in sanitation and cleanliness. I will be writing to MLA and health minster on these aspects," she said.
She found that the number of patients was less here and wondered whether it is holiday for patients on Sunday. She said she will take action if it comes to her notice that patients were directed to other hospitals. She added that she would speak to health minister urging him to take suitable action against the guilty.
Health officer, Sushela P S, block Congress president, Muhammed Badagannur, advocate, Kumbra Durgaprasad Rai, child development programme officer, Shanti Hegde and others were present. The district review meeting is being held at Mangaluru under the leadership of women's commission chairperson on September 25 in the presence of deputy commissioner of the district.
