Bengaluru, Sep 24: State JD(S) president and former Karnataka chief minister, H D Kumaraswamy, underwent an open heart surgery at Apollo Hospital here on Saturday September 23. Cardiologist of the hospital, Dr Sathaki P Nambala, led a team of doctors which conducted the said surgery over a period of four hours. Kumaraswamy, who was taken off artificial breathing equipment later, was shifted to intensive care unit of the hospital.
The hospital sources said that the former chief minister would be shifted to the ward after 48 hours and that no one would be allowed to meet him during this period. Addressing a press conference at Apollo Hospital, director of Jayadeva Institute of Cardiology here, Dr C N Manjunath, explained that the surgery conducted on Kumaraswamy relating to heart valve was successful, and that he would require to remain in the hospital for five to seven days. He also added that the patient would be required to take rest for two weeks thereafter. He also explained that Kumaraswamy's tissue valve was replaced with an aortic valve during the surgery which might last for ten to 15 years, and that he would need to maintain control over diabetes, body weight and food consumption.
Dr Sathaki said that the surgery now performed was minimal invasive rado aortic heart valve replacement surgery and that the new valve was fitted in the place of the old one by creating a hole through the rib cage.
