Lakra Seeks Support from Corporates for Revival of Hockey

Ranchi, Jun 5: India centre-half Birendra Lakra on Wednesday sought help from all quarters, including the corporate sector, to help revive hockey's past glory.

Urging the media to highlight the National game and help it bring back the lost glory, the 23-year-old member of the silver medal winning Indian side at the last month's Azlan Shah tournament in Malaysia, said that the game would rise only when a player witnesses a lucrative career opportunity in it.

He also lauded Jharkhand women player's contribution to the National game. “Both men and women from Jharkhand have sent several players to National side, with the number of girls being more,” said Lakra who is the brother of former India player Bimal Lakra and National women's team member Asanta Lakra.

“No other state has given so many women players as Jharkhand has done...If the players get proper infrastructure and motivation, then Jharkhand will continue to supply quality players in both the men's and women's section,” he added.

He also expressed disappointment over the fact that only his family members were present at the airport to receive him last month after he returned from Malayasia with the silver medal.

“I thought there would be some people at the airport to welcome me, but I felt sad when I found none. This will only discourage the players,” rued Lakra.

Lakra's bad luck continues. The Lakra family is famous in India for their contribution to the game of hockey. However, they must be thinking that they have ed a wrong career sport in view of limited opportunities to earn their living unlike the cricketers perhaps. With falling standards in Indian hockey, no corporate body is coming forward to support the game. Many years ago, the Tatas, Mahindras, Air India, Indian Airlines, and so many other top organisations invested by recruiting good players and forming solid teams.

Unfortunately, due to various reasons including the mismanagement in the Indian Hockey Federation, the game in the country is at a low level. Unless and untill, a super brain steps in and revamps the entire hockey set in India, we will remain at the bottom for a long long time. The International Hockey Federation has promised help - it is time for the Indian Olympic Association to re organise Indian Hockey on a war footing and revive our golden days of glory. The popular Premier Hockey League should be re started which will give a huge chance for budding stars in the game just like the Indian Premier League gave a chance to India's rising cricketers. Today, Indian Hockey can be compared to a fallen boxer in the ring waiting to get up before the final count by the referee. Will Indian Hockey rise again ?
