Telgi Brought to Bangalore, to Appear before Court

Bangalore, Jun 2: Fake stamp paper kingpin Abdul Kareem Lala Telgi was brought to the city on Sunday, for the hearing of his nine cases pending before the special court.

Telgi, who was lodged at the Yerawada jail in Pune, was brought by Udyan Express and arrived at 9.15 am. He was taken to the Parappana Agrahara Central Prison amidst tight security.

Of the 44 cases he is facing across the country, 13 are in Karnataka. In these, he has been convicted in three cases and acquitted in one.

After the Supreme Court order in 2003, a video conference facility was installed in the Yerwada jail to expedite the trial, which was being held across the country.

However, the BSNL withdrew the facility as the jail authorities failed to pay up the telephone bills amounting to thousands of rupees.

Telgi’s counsel Shankarappa said: "As there were cases pending against him in Karnataka, we requested the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) court to transfer him to Bangalore prison. The court consented and issued an order that he could be transferred by May 14. However, due to the elections, it was delayed."

He said Telgi would be lodged in the Parappana Agrahara prison for a month or two, depending on how long it takes for the judges to deliver their verdict. He will appear before the special court on Monday.
