Mangalore, May 31: The district department of backward castes and minorities has invited applications from eligible students for admission into the post-metric hostels run by it, for the year 2008-09.
Students who study in rural areas, for PUC, BE, MBBS, diploma or other professional courses in government or government approved educationsl institutions, will only be eligible for applying for the accommodation. Annual income limit criterion for the families of desirous applicants will be Rs.15,000 for students belonging to categories 2a, 2b, 3a and 3b and Rs 50,920 in case of SC/ST students. They also need to satisfy other conditions like the distance between the educational institution and their village should be more than five kms and that they should be residents of the state.
A declaration from the gram panchayat secretary certifying about the eligibility criterion having been satisfied, has to be attached to the applications. They should have also passed their previous annual examination. The department runs five hostels in Mangalore, three in Bantwal, four each in Belthangady and Puttur and two in Sullia taluk. The hostels in the city are situated in Ashok Nagar, Surathkal, Chilimbi, Valencia and a girls hostel at Balmatta.
