Mangaluru, Sep 7: The murder of journalist and progressive thinker, Gauri Lankesh, has evoked widespread condemnation all along Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts. Angered by the brutal killing of the fiercely independent crusader for free press, protests were held at various places along the twin districts.
On behalf of Dakshina Kannada district women's Congress committee, a programme to pay tributes to Gauri Lankesh was held opposite Lalbagh Junction here where the activists lighted candles. Women's Congress district president, Shalet Pinto, state vice president, Mamata D S Gatti, and city mayor, Kavita Sanil, spoke on the occasion, criticizing the killing of Gauri Lankesh in strong words.
Dakshina Kannada working journalists union and Mangalore Press Club held protest opposite the office of the deputy commissioner here. Protests were also held by Campus Front of India at Jyoti Junction, Welfare Party of India, DYFI and other like-minded organizations opposite deputy commissioner's office, and Popular Front of India in front of the Gandhi statue near Town Hall here.
CPI district secretary, V Kuckian, and president of the Federation of Indian Rationalist Associations, Narendra Nayak, were among those who condemned the said killing. Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad city unit secretary, Manala, said that killing of Gauri Lankesh is an act which has made the society to hang its head in shame. He urged for the immediate arrest of people involved with the murders of Gauri Lankesh and others.
'Samudaya' Karnataka state committee vice president, Vasudev Uchila, secretary of Mahatma Gandhi Peace Foundation, Dr Ismail N and office bearers of Karnataka Islamic Sahitya Academy, too joined others in condemning this murder.
Udupi: A number of organizations held protests and condemned the murder of Gauri Lankesh all over the district on Wednesday September 6. District working journalists union held protest near the martyrs memorial at Ajjarkad while Komu Sauharda Vedike held protest in the evening. Journalists from the district took part in the protests by wearing black badges.
DYFI which held protest at Shastri Circle Kundapur, demanded early arrest of the culprits involved.
