Vijayapura, Aug 29: Three members of a single family died after the roof of the kitchen built of wood and layer of mud came crashing down due to heavy rain.
The deceased were Ashok Goudennavar (40), his wife, Shakuntala (30), and their three-year-old son, Chandrashekhar. Two other children of the couple, who were sleeping in the adjacent hall, survived.
Ashok used to eke out a living by selling coconuts in the roadside. The family lives in a old house. Ashok couple, along with their three children, and brother, Amogh, were sleeping in the hall with three children. As the thee-year-old boy was frequently crying, the couple went into the kitchen with the boy and slept there. At around 5.45 am, the roof caved in, causing instant death of all the three.
Amogh, who heard the sound, tried to open the door of the kitchen but failed. He then brought a ladder, went up and found that the entire roof had come down with huge mound of sand on his brother, wife and the couple's child. Although he tried to remove the debris from the bodies and provide them medical help, the three had already died.
