Koppal, Aug 29: Friction arose between police personnel looking after law and order situation during the immersion procession, and participants of the procession on the night of Sunday August 27 at NGO Colony in the town. After the police resorted to lathi charge, the devotees ran helter-skelter, leaving behind the idols of Lord Ganesha.

Young men from NGO Colony were taking three idols of Lord Ganesha in a procession for being immersed in Hulikere in the outskirts of the town. When the procession reached Ashoka Circle, the participants of the procession switched on the music and began to dance to the tunes. The police objected, but the youth began to argue with the police. When the police resorted to caning, they ran away, leaving behind the idols of of the Lord on the road. The police then took the idols to Hulikere and released them into water.
