Udupi, Aug 22: "The Indian Catholic Youth Movement (ICYM) Katapadi branch in association with Udupi Deanery ICYM on Monday August 21 will organize ‘Gaddeyalli Yuva Oggattu’ (Gadyanth Yuva Ekvot) a youth sports day. Preparations to make this event unique are afoot. The event will be held in an agricultural marshy field in Chokkadi near the bank of Papanashini River," said Fr Ronson R D’Souza, CSC, parish priest, St Vincent De Paul Church Katapady at a press meet here.
Briefing the programme schedule Fr Ronson said, "The day will begin at 8.00 am with a Holy Eucharistic celebration at St Vincent De Paul Church, Katapady followed by a colourful procession to the arena of the event. Juliet Veera D'Souza, president of Katapady Grama Panchayat will flag off the march towards the arena of the sports-events. The formal inauguration will take place at 10.00 am. Mnsgr Baptist Menezes, vicar general of the diocese will preside over the programme. Distinguished guests of honour Vinay Kumar Sorake, MLA, Kaup constituency and Kishore Alva, executive director of UPCL Adani Group will inaugurate the event and the sports meet.
Curtains will be drawn on the day's events at 5.00 pm with a valedictory function. Fr Gerald Isaac Lobo, Bishop of Udupi will grace the occasion as the president of the programme.
Pramod Madhwaraj, minister for sports and fisheries, Karnataka government will be the guest of honor along with Fr Valerian Mendonca, chancellor of Udupi diocese,vicar Var of Udupi deanery, Priyanka Mary Francis, deputy commissioner Udupi and Prashanth Jathanna, member, Christian Development Committee Karnataka.
Sports events organized during the day are volleyball, throwball, relay, three-legged race, pyramid-formation, rope-pulling and more.
Cash prize and championship trophy will be awarded to the best performing team followed by a runners-up and cash prize for the second best performing team. First and second prizes will also be awarded for individual and duet game events.
Around 700 youth from the diocese are expected to partake in the event. Katapady Grama Panchayat and police personnel have extended their wholehearted support for the smooth functioning and its success.
