Mangaluru, Aug 17: Ashok Nagara Yuvaka Sangha celebrated the 71st Independence Day with distributing wheelchair, cycle ,medical aid, uniforms to children and clothes to senior citizens. The programme was held at Ashok Nagara Higher Primary School auditorium on Thursday August 17.
Henry D’Souza , NRI entrepreneur and director of Merit Freight Systems presided over the programme. Joseph Mathias, managing director of Merit Freight Systems and Vinay Vas of Dubai Palm hotel and Abjad Grand hotel inaugurated the programme by lighting the lamp. Sandhya Vas, physiotherapist, BP Harish Kumar, proprietor, Panchalingeshwara Tyres B Nagesh, honorary president of AYS, and Shankar N Poonja were present.
Addressing the gathering, Henry D’Souza said, “Local associations have more opportunities to serve people in city. They are familiar with situations and conditions of people here. They are the trouble shooters on local issues.”
“I know Ashok Nagar Yuvaka Sangha has been engaged in social services from many years. For their dedicated service, they were recognized as the best youth club in district by the government. I hope that they continue to serve the needy in future as well.”
In his speech, Joseph Mathias said, “We got freedom from the British colonial rule 70 years ago. In pre-independence era, everything was decided by the Britishers for the people of India. But that power now has been given to us. We can now plan and decide the national building process from the grass root level and make a mark at the international scenario.”
“Today many small organizations, set up by locals are doing excellent work towards nation building. Ashok Nagar Yuvaka Mandala is such organization which is doing its best for that cause. We should support these organizations to attain their goals,” he added.
B Nagesh Karkera said, “In memory of late Cyril D’Souza and late Agnes D’Souza, every year, Henry D’Souza helps us conduct this programme. Joseph Mathias has been also extending aid for us in memory of his parents late Lawrance Mathias and late Mary Mathias. We are thankful to them for their concern towards poor and abandoned.”
