Kundapur, Aug 17: Unidentified thieves took away five jersey cows from a cattle shed within Golihole gram panchayat limits near Byndoor in the early hours of Wednesday August 16. The cows belonged to Yellur Rajesh Kini.
A total of nine cows were kept in the cattle shed. Out of them, five cows were stolen. The thieves also are found to have killed a calf by smothering it. The theft came to light when Rajesh Kini reached the shed at about 5 am on Wednesday for milking the cows. Thereafter, he filed complaint in Byndoor police station.
As per information collected by the police, a local, who had come out of his house, had seen a Tata Ace vehicle and a Maruti Omni car moving towards Halkal at around 2 am. It is suspected that these vehicles were used to steal the five cows.
The family of Kini had raised loan of six lac rupees a year back from a cooperative institution to acquire the cattle shed and the cows. It is entirely dependent on dairying for a living. The family collected 28 litres of milk everyday and sold it at Kollur, which is about ten km away, for a living. The disappearance of cows has delivered a deadly blow to the family.
Deputy superintendent of police from the town, praveen Kumar, visited the spot. He also checked CCTV footage of camerals located on lthe road and promised to find out the thieves soon.
President of the taluk Raita Sangha, Deepak Kumar Shetty, district president of Labourers Forum, Ravi Shetty and others visited the spot. They also urged the police to find out the culprits soon, and take steps to see that such incidents do not recur in future.
